Can anyone comment on the dining halls- Bartlett or Cathey? Which one is better?
Sorry for the double post^
South (Cathey) is better.
That’s what I’ve been reading on other sources. Thx
Do you know the students who came to NU during homecoming week and painted our rock lol? Go Cats
No, but you guys seem to have a lot of rocks.
@HydeSnark Just wanted to thank you for all your help in answering my question. I don’t know if you’ll be in Burton-Judson next year, but I hope to see you there!
Also, since generally people want to know what it takes to get in, for UChicago it’s really different than other schools’ admissions.
My stats (I just got in EA and enrolled a week after my decision came out): 1500/1600 SAT (720 CR and 780 M), 3.82/4 GPA UW and 4.62/5 GPA W. White, upper middle class/lower upper class (I don’t know exactly. My family makes like ~250,000 per year) male, from MA Top 200-250 public high school nationally, school does not rank (but I’d almost certainly place myself in the top 5-10%). EC’s: Captain of Mock Trial Team (4 years and received rec letter from lawyer coach (which was amazing)), Vice President of FBLA (3 years, State Champ and National Finalist in Management), College Philosophy and History Courses (w/ research, independently, 4 years), Founding member of Philosophical Discussion Club 2 years), Jazz Pianist (9 years), Volunteering (~100 hours), Recs (teacher recs were solid, Counselor rec I’m guessing really solid), Did not request an interview (I don’t think they really care about the interview either)
Now for the most important part in UChicago admissions in my opinion:
ESSAYS
My extended essay is what I believe got me in (wrote about something really intellectual involving philosophy that displayed that I really can think deeply about a complex subject, really risky in my opinion (I distorted the prompt a bit, and I even had a bibliography in the end )), Why Chicago supplement was okay (had a theme but wasn’t great, didn’t really display my passion either), Made a list for the optional supplement (lol)
CommonApp essay was fantastic (displayed my passion for learning for the sake of learning and for philosophy)
I applied as a Philosophy and Allied Fields major (on pre-law)
I think Chicago cares immensely about the essays (I am saying this because I was deferred ED from Penn with legacy (which is statistically easier to get into)), and the only difference between my two applications were the essays. I can’t be sure that is what got me in, but you wouldn’t be able to convince me otherwise.
Hope this helps.
No problem. I will be living in BJ again next year.
I saw that some people here were wondering about HA and wanted to add that about 7 students in my class (class of 2019) placed into that course their first quarter, and not all of them chose to take it. It’s really only reasonable to take if you’re a math major, and even then I have a friend in analysis (he is a first year math major) who wishes he had gone through at least some of the calculus sequence here beforehand because you gain lots of useful skills that they don’t teach you in high school/AP calculus.
This may be a silly question, but do you know if I can combine AP Calculus AB credit along with taking Elementary Statistics next year and receive 2 Core Math credits?
Pretty sure you forgo your calc credit if you don’t actually take calc here. The point of the core isn’t to check off a bunch of boxes, it’s so that you go (reasonably) deep in a lot of subjects. There’s no point if they let you go halfway in Calc and halfway in Stat.
What do you do for fun there?
Ahhh okay. I was just curious. Math (calculus rather) isn’t really my thing. Neither are the sciences (well most of them). I just wanted to know if I could get the credit for classes in those areas so I can put in as many classes as possible into the humanities/social sciences/business/law, the areas which I really enjoy. I guess taking an extra calculus class or computer science class won’t kill me though.
Is that a joke^ “what do do for fun there”?
Did your son or daughter apply^?
@londondad I’m pretty sure your question has already been answered up-thread, but that’s pretty broad. If some method of entertaining yourself exists, someone at UChicago does it for fun. A few broad categories are typical college things (clubs, greek life, music/drama/film/journalism organizations, etc.), going into the rest of Chicago (restaurant hopping, museums, shows, etc.), and UChicago specific events (scav, kuvia, etc.).
Bumping this now that lots of more people got in. Get your questions that the Admissions Office will ignore in the propaganda page known as the admitted students group answered here.
LOL!
So a lot of the old houses/dorms are getting closed down and a new dorm, North, is being built. Should we mark that down?
Is it too late for Snell-Hitchcock and BJ? Will it be too late after the 31st? My parents are making me wait to see if any college offers me more money (I seriously hope they don’t). What about South?
It’s probably not too late for Snitchcock and BJ if you deposit before ivy day. If you deposit soonish on Ivy Day you’ll probably be fine.
North and South should be pretty easy to get into.
If that’s true that’s awesome. So, I get like 3 options on the housing form, and I rank them?
Gosh, I forget. Are you a math major? What’s your full schedule, if you don’t mind my asking? I’m already thinking of what classes I’ll take lol.
