I am a US citizen living abroad and applying to colleges in the USA. Do I have to give the IELTS?

I was born in the states, and my parents already applied for Green card. I was in USA until I finished grade 4. I also visited the country once or twice a year ever since I moved to Bangladesh.
Im giving my SAT 1 this January 23rd 2016. Im planning on applying for the Fall Semester. I know im a bit late and close to the deadlines of most universities but I have had some problems with my grades and had to give retakes of some subjects during my AS level (cambridge) so I could not give the SAT before. I got an A in English Language on my O level Exam.
I am also studying in an English medium school.

I’m worried that giving the upcoming IELTS on January 30th will delay my applications even further. Is it necessary for me to give the IELTS exam?

My daughter was a US Citizen living abroad when she applied to college and did not have to take the IELTS. Are you applying to US schools or UK schools? As you are a US citizen you would not need to get a visa (and prove you speak English) (I am assuming you have a US passport?). If in USA I would suggest contacting the admissions office of a college you are interested in and ask them.

BTW, in American English, we “take” exams. The professor will “give” an exam. :slight_smile:

Have you not applied yet? you are likely to be running out of places still accepting applications…

Each college and university that you apply to has its own policy about this. You need to contact each of them separately, and ask them. Some will require an English proficiency exam, others won’t.

@bopper US schools and yes I have an American passport. Thanks for the grammar!

@collegemom3717 No… still haven’t applied.
