I am an international student, how do scholarships work? you apply but do you recieve them in cash? (if you’re rewarded with one…)

No, you don’t receive the money in cash. The money goes towards school costs.

Unless you’re going to apply for private scholarships from your own country, you’re not likely going to get private scholarships here. There are some SCHOOLS that give scholarships to int’ls, but there aren’t many schools that do so. Either way, the money goes to the schools.

so practically, if i “win” a scholarship, & I’m not enrolled in college yet…how do I make it valid the day that I’m enrolling in college?

Scholarship organizations generally mail checks directly to the university where you enroll.

Are you talking about private scholarships from your home country? Or are you talking about a scholarship that a SCHOOL awards you to help with college costs at THAT college?

If School A awards you a merit scholarship, then it gets applied to your billing account to reduce the amount that you owe.

Again, the chances of you getting a private scholarship here in the US is very small. There are schools that will give you merit scholarships, but not likely privaate scholarship sources.

There is money based on being from a needy family. That is called financial aid and comes in the form of government grants, govt loans, govt work-study and school grants. Most financial aid does not cover the full cost of a needy student attending college and an international student would not qualify for govt money from our govt. Most schools do not award school financial aid to needy international students but a few very competitive schools (like Harvard) do.

There is also merit scholarship money. Most merit scholarships are school money although there are many private organizations that provide scholarship $. (Most private scholarships are for small, one-year amounts, like $500. There are a handful of top, private scholarships which are very competitive.) Each place gets to set its own rules. Most organizations and schools only award merit to domestic students but it’s entirely up to them.

When money is awarded, it goes directly to the college/university to pay your expenses and you have to pay the balance to enroll for the semester or year.
