I am an international student, how do scholarships work?

There is money based on being from a needy family. That is called financial aid and comes in the form of government grants, govt loans, govt work-study and school grants. Most financial aid does not cover the full cost of a needy student attending college and an international student would not qualify for govt money from our govt. Most schools do not award school financial aid to needy international students but a few very competitive schools (like Harvard) do.

There is also merit scholarship money. Most merit scholarships are school money although there are many private organizations that provide scholarship $. (Most private scholarships are for small, one-year amounts, like $500. There are a handful of top, private scholarships which are very competitive.) Each place gets to set its own rules. Most organizations and schools only award merit to domestic students but it’s entirely up to them.

When money is awarded, it goes directly to the college/university to pay your expenses and you have to pay the balance to enroll for the semester or year.
