I am in shock-orlando terror attack

The latest story. I was waiting for something like this. It wouldn’t surprise me if it were false – because someone coming forward to claim this kind of thing was inevitable – but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it were true. It would certainly be consistent with everything that’s come out about his previous visits to the club, etc. And would confirm my belief that the Isis/Al Qaeda business was a cover story he concocted recently to hide his self-loathing. (There’s no evidence, of course, that he actually had any religious “faith” of any kind at any time in his life, let alone that his actions were central to it.)

@DonnaL According to the ex-lover, he apparently had sex with two Puerto Rican men, one of whom was HIV+. The ex-lover says he got angry and promised “revenge” on gay people.

Yeah, dude, it was gay people’s fault you had unprotected sex with strangers. Smh

Nonsense. No religion counts terror as a “central belief”. In fact, I think religion served as nothing more than a slight tipping point to the shooter. It seems to me that he preferred to be remembered as a terrorist than a gay man (as his sexuality probably shamed him greatly), hence the 911 call. Considering the kind of household he grew up in, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the conclusion the FBI reaches.

Of course no religion counts terror as a central belief. Instead, what we here in the US consider terror, others may call ,“jihad”. Or,“religious duty”. Or, “the law”.

As far as a tipping point, you may be right. However, if your religion (and particularly how your family views that religion), considers it acceptable, and even desirable to execute homosexuals, it’s certainly not that much of a leap for a violent and disturbed individual to take, to cross that line into action.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: We’re still having to delete posts that aren’t related to the thread topic. :frowning:

He bought airline tickets for afterwards so it is not a given that he was planning on dying at all. So the thought he set himself up to die as a terrorist rather than a gay man doesn’t make sense.

OK, we’re drifting away from the topic again. Please get it back on-track. Thanks!

@sax I don’t think we should assume he was thinking rationally.

Whether or not he planned to die (and he was an idiot if he thought he had a chance of getting away), it still makes sense to me that he wanted to be thought of as doing it for religious reasons, rather than because he was a self-hating gay man

Kind of makes me think, if your father thinks you deserve to die because you are gay, your parents home country executes people because they are gay…there are many ingrained reasons to hate yourself. It’s not really a mystery why he would have self loathing. No doubt, in some twisted way, he may have thought others deserved to die because they were gay.

I don’t know why these jerks don’t just kill themselves, why they have to take so many other people with them. So unbelievably selfish.

Busdriver, every time I read about one of those awful murder-suicides, where a guy decides to kill his wife and/or children before killing himself, I think to myself, why couldn’t he have just reversed the order, and done the suicide first?

The hateful CA baptist church that applauded this slaughter has lost its lease. The property owner released a statement denouncing their hate speech.

Shooting attack now in a cinema in Germany.

I wonder what the impact will be on today Brexit vote?

I heard from people in Germany on my tennis site that gunman is dead. His gun had only blanks and most of the injuries were from teargas.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could have a similar outcome when nut job enters our movie theaters with a gun? Only the assailant was killed and no other injuries bring reported.

A few of the attacks on airplanes (though without guns) resulted in only the suspect (or no one) being killed.

Well duh. It’s easier to get a good outcome when the attacker(s) don’t have a gun. How many attacks where perpetrator(s) is wielding a gun or guns (many seem to have several guns on them) have that as an outcome?

Sad if true – apparently, a father of one of the victims refused to claim his son’s body because his son was gay.

To me, there are few more contemptible things a parent can possibly do than rejecting their child – in life or in death – because of who that child is. Unfortunately, it’s all too common.

That is so sad. Before this, the largest murder of gay people was in a nightclub in New Orleans in 1974. Most families had a very difficult time arranging for church funerals for their deceased family members, as they were refused by their churches. One local Episcopal priest opened his church to all and was widely criticized by many in his congregation. So much has changed - but not enough.
