I am in TCNJ for CS but my parents want me to transfer to Rutgers CS

Stay if you are happy. Rutgers is nationally ranked but TCNJ is #5 north least regional, it’s a high rank. And it’s the opposite of Rutgers, it’s small and more personalized. I would just keep pointing out that you are happy. And there is no guarantee all your credits would transfer.

I graduated from Rutgers with a CS degree 2 decades ago, even back then classes were huge and it was hard to actually get to know anyone. The ability to know everyone in the CS department is awesome. I wouldn’t switch if I was you.

I’m a retired programmer with a CS degree. The name of the school on your diploma won’t matter, career-wise. Unless your parents want you to change schools because then you can live at home and it saves money, the only reason to change schools that I can think of is if Rutgers has some kind of specialty track that you like that TCNJ doesn’t have. Small class sizes were a major reason I switched from a big public flagship to a tiny public flagship. If you’re happy at your current school, stay there.

Plenty of threads like this stay open and active for longer than 10 days…

Yes, just hopeful OP comes back to explain the why and if they are given a choice, etc…ie hoping OP interacts with us so we can help them better. That’s why we’re here!!

Sorry!! I didn’t get a notification that people were replying. All I did was tell my parents that I will think about it and they didn’t ask me again.

Also, I have an overall GPA of 3.381 and a major GPA of 3.223 with an A in Algorithms, B- in Database Systems, B’s in Data Structures and Discrete Structures and an A- in Introduction to Data Science. Is this good for a computer science major that just finished their freshman year who wants to apply to grad school?

You can always find a grad school that will take you. Frankly, they need the money that’s generated by student tuition. It’s just that the ones with the best reputations will require higher grades to get in. You should be able to get into a perfectly respectable graduate program with grades like that.

There’s no need to go to grad school right after you get your undergrad in CS unless you really want to. After I got my CS degree, I worked for about 4 years before enrolling in a part-time, night-school graduate program for an Industrial Engineering degree. The graduate degree didn’t really do much for my career advancement, although it was interesting and I don’t regret getting it.

Those classes are fine. Graduate schools usually look at your last 2 years holistically. As long as you have a good background in CS and they’re confident you can handle the rigor of graduate level courses, depending on the graduate school and your GRE scores, you should get in somewhere. Just keep your grades where they are.

For the fall 2024 semester I will be tutoring Algorithms and Statistics. I might even tutor Python.

Hey everyone, here is a quick update! Apparently, my parents have stopped asking me to change colleges. Either because I would give them a vague answer or because graduates from other top institutions like NYU are struggling to get jobs because of the economy. I will be taking computer architecture and cryptography and cybersecurity for sophomore fall and will begin tutoring for algorithms and statistics. I am also thinking of doing research in algorithms during sophomore spring! Thank you all for your support!

Hey everyone,
My parents put their foot down and now I have no choice but to transfer. So, I will be somewhere else in fall 2025. I want some advice on transferring from an NJ school to a UC school. The UC schools that I’m applying to are UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, UC Merced, and UC Riverside. I also have a 3.435 GPA right now. Do you think it’s possible for me to get into one of the UC schools?

I’m sorry to hear that you can’t stay at a place you like and which has good outcomes for your major.

A question — what happens if you don’t get in anywhere that you apply to transfer to? Will your parents refuse to pay for you to finish your degree?

So they are willing to pay more than double ?

Apply and see.

Why are they so against TCNJ?

I don’t see those schools necessarily giving you a career advantage, especially if you want an East Coast career. Maybe UCI…maybe…would confer an advantage. Certainly not the others. Btw at UCI, it empties each weekend due to proximity to home. My son likes the Trader Joe’s next door. He lives in Irvine. Says it’s empty on weekends / easy to shop. The others may be similar - well maybe not Merced.

It’s too bad that your parents don’t allow you to continue on a path you like.
