No, they’ll still pay for my degree, they’ll just be disappointed.
I just asked my dad if he would be willing to pay for me to attend a California school. He said sure. My parents stalked other people’s LinkedIn and noticed that people from tCNJ don’t get as good job outcomes as everyone else they know.
My parents want me to apply to Rutgers, but if I were to transfer, I wouldn’t want to go to Rutgers, I would go somewhere far away from them.
They should ask the school for outcomes. One can see if people get jobs in an industry from a school via LinkedIn but I wouldn’t judge a school’s career program that way.
There’s much less expensive excellent publics than the UCs.
Ps I see companies like Verizon, Prudential, Amazon, TATA and more.
Good luck.
Try Virginia Tech. Lots of NJ kids attend VT.
Oh good. I’m glad you won’t be left stranded half-way through a degree.
@Gumbymom Can you comment on this student’s likelihood of a transfer application to the UCs from TCNJ in CS?
The thing is that I want to apply to the UC’s so that I can leave my parents here in NJ, while I go live my life in California where no one will tell me what to do.
VT is pretty far away. Not easy to get to either lol.
-
UC’s accept Junior level transfers so 60 semester/90 quarter units by time of matriculation.
-
Priority is given to California community college transfers (more than 90% are from California CC’s) and OOS transfers are given low priority.
-
Can you afford to pay OOS fees if you are accepted at $75K/year to attend with no financial aid. You will need the cooperation of your parents if you are under the age of 24 unless you are able to prove you are financially independent. Do not plan to get California residency and in-state tuition if you are coming here for educational purposes.
Which UC campuses are interested in transferring? What is your current college GPA?
Each UC campus will have General Education and specific major prep courses required for transfer.
These are the OOS admit rates for all UC campuses but not major specific. UC’s will be highly competitive for CS so admit numbers will be much lower.
Campus | OUT OF STATE (applicants/admits) |
---|---|
Berkeley | 6% (625/39) |
Davis | 28% (301/86) |
Irvine | 17% (508/85) |
Los Angeles | 6% (738/44) |
Merced | 48% (92/44) |
Riverside | 33% (244/80) |
San Diego | 25% (514/126) |
Santa Barbara | 26% (397/102) |
Santa Cruz | 27% (276/75) |
I’m interested in transferring to any one of them. I currently have a 3.435 GPA.
How many college credits do you currently have?
Here are the UC transfer GPA admit ranges for CS and as you can see currently you are competitive only for 1 UC campus which is UC Merced.
UC Berkeley: 3.85-4.00
UC Davis: 3.72-3.96
UC Irvine: 3.85-4.00
UCLA: 3.97-4.00
UC Merced: 3.36-3.85
UC Riverside: 3.70-3.96
UC Santa Barbara: 3.93-4.00
UC San Diego: 3.89-4.00
UC Santa Cruz: 3.58-3.93
UC Merced and UC Riverside offer TAG (which is a Transfer Guarantee for California community college students) so they will get additional priority if the requirements are met so they will take most of the available CS spots.
Here is the transfer requirements for UC Merced:
General Education requirements are the same for all campuses:::
Course Requirements/Subject Requirements
Complete the following seven-course pattern, earning a grade of C or better in each course:
- Two transferable English composition courses
- One transferable mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning course that has a published prerequisite of intermediate algebra
- Four transferable courses chosen from at least two of the following areas: Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biological and Physical Sciences
CS major requirements link: Major Preparation | Undergraduate Admissions
There are no articulation agreements between the UC’s and OOS Universities so you need to match your courses at TCNJ to the UC requirements.
Va Tech is far away yet you are asking about UCs?
Makes little sense. You can fly to Roanoke.
If closer, how bout URI OR James Madison or UAH. Or if willing to pay RPI or Rose Hulman. Or larger Indiana U or U Kentucky ?
I’m not paying for my bachelor’s, my dad is.
Sorry - @LeastComplicated wrote that about Va Tech and distance. I thought it was you. My bad.
Your gpa will be limiting at big names but not limiting overall.
I gave some to look at. Farther away U of Nevada, Oregon State. Check out Cal States like SDSU, Arizona and Arizona State and Colorado State. For smaller, UAH, Tennessee Tech, U Denver, and more.
I’m not sure they get you more than TCNJ does outcome wise.
The problem is that I want to stay here at TCNJ. I’ve met so many great people that are my friends and I don’t want to leave all of that.
Then just apply to transfer at colleges where you are very unlikely to get accepted.
LOL. My parents are paying money to get me a college transfer counselor, so I’m not so sure about that.
Oh well there goes that idea.
A lot can change between now and when acceptances come out next spring. Hopefully either they will let you stay where you want to be or you will get excited about a new school.
What about the idea of getting your bachelor’s from TCNJ and then getting a master’s from someplace they are happier with?
Perhaps the counselor will echo what many posters are saying here…that TCNJ has good outcomes for CS.
