AT & T sent me the text number to confirm for Call Protect and then says my line is not eligible. ?? Maybe because it’s a business account (under our own corporation)? I am SO unimpressed by everything they “do” for their business customers…even paying the bill is an extremely cumbersome, multi-step process. They also increased the price of our package by 30% two months’ ago. The only option in our area…
We used to have the “do not call list” and it worked wonderfully. What happened?
Just now - at my elderly mother’s home - I got a call from "Ryan’. Warning me not to use my computer and that I would be locked out if I didn’t work with him. I told him I was SO grateful. He was going to be free where as my therapist was costing hundreds of dollars. Ryan was going to solve my computer addiction problem. I told him I was waiting with baited breath for him to lock me out as we speak and that I considered him my personal savior.
He hung up…go figure.
Yes, seriously annoying.
AT&T Call Detect works pretty decently. Haven’t had that many robocalls at all.
The annoying one that it actually blocked was the Chinese Embassy/Consulate robo scam.
AT&T also has manual call blocking for landlines. By signing into your account on line, you can enter up to (I think?) 100 numbers to block and your phone won’t ring at all. This is mostly just good for repeat offenders who call over and over.
I just use my cell now and have two lines of defense against spammmers. First, I have been using google voice for years and never actually give out my cell # to anyone unless they are a close friend or relative. Everyone else gets the GV #, which I can also receive texts with on the GV app on my iPhone, so no need to give out your actually cell to get texts. When people call my GV #, it forwards to my cell, but it blocks known spammers and also allows you to manually block any number (calls and texts). When that number calls you, the person will hear a “Number not in service” message. If they text, you just won’t receive it.
If a spammer makes it past GV, I also use YouMail (on-line voicemail service) as my second line of defense. YouMail also has a large database of known spam numbers it blocks automatically. If one still makes it through, you can report it to be added to the database, and just like GV, manually block the number so your phone won’t ring if that # ever calls you again. It also allows you to automatically block all numbers that come up as “blocked” or “unknown” so that they automatically go to voicemail and get a recording that you don’t accept calls from blocked or unknown numbers. I use the free version but they also have paid versions with more perks that can be quite useful for small businesses.
My goodness. That sounds effective, and also extraordinarily complicated.
Last week we got a couple of calls from some spammer. Since we have NomoRobo, it rang once and disappeared.
Then one night that number rang at 1:51 AM!!! Only one ring, but that’s enough to wake me up. The next morning, I figured out how to use my landline apparatus to block the call. Well, last night that number called again at 4:23 AM – again, also one ring. I have to figure out something better so the phone doesn’t ring at all.
Well, that’s prime working time in India, so… Don’t you have a dnd feature on your phone? It can be automatically turned on between x and y hours. I always do that with my iPhone.
You can set the Do Not Disturb on your phone for certain hours but still allow only your contacts to call during that time.
This is a landline. I don’t think I can do that with a landline.
@VeryHappy can you turn off the ringer on the phone on your bedroom?
Let your family know they should, call on your cell…if there is an emergency.
I keep getting these random calls in Japanese or Chinese…it’s the oddest thing. I have to block so many numbers. I also get these calls where it’s a lady going “Oh hi It’s Jolene, opps giggle giggle my headset is all out of whack, let me talk to you about our great deals…” It’s so annoying.
There is a funny John Oliver segment on Robocalls, look it up on YouTube…it’s really funny!
@whitepicketfence, some of the Robokiller “answers” are hilarious.
