Okay, I am not sure where to post this. I tried reddit with no luck, and I hope this place works.
I want to learn about MANY subjects. To do this, I want to find out what textbook classes use.
My community college has a syllabus archive where I can find a syllabus along with the recommended books. Sadly, my CC is pretty small. So, I lack access to many subjects.
That is why I am here. I am trying to find ways to locate what textbooks classes use. Any ideas?
Every school and class is going to use different textbooks. I’m sure a google search could pull up some syllabi that are available online. You could also just search for any subject’s textbook on google or amazon to get ideas. You can also see if there are any textbooks available in the library. If you live near a 4-year university, their library will likely have a number of textbooks either available there or with the ability to request them from another library.
There are also a lot of resources available for learning subjects online.
http://www.bkstr.com/ (college bookstore manager) can also tell you what books various classes used at many colleges. Of course, you will have to cross reference the course numbers in the college’s course catalog.
The assigned textbooks in various schools can range very much. Calculus 1 is a class that is taught at any college you could name, but between all of these calculus 1 classes, there are hundreds of different texts used. Some may not even use textbooks.
You’re probably better off searching on your own. If you want to learn about introductory psychology, just google “introductory psychology textbook.” If you want to learn about introductory physics, google “introductory physics textbook” or “university physics textbook.” If you want to learn about upper level undergraduate thermodynamics and statistical physics, you’d google with the appropriate terms.
It’s worth pointing out that you don’t really ‘need’ textbooks to learn about a lot of different subjects. There are open source and otherwise online books that cover everything and beyond that which would be covered in a typical course. Most textbooks are designed to be accompanied by a lecture, and as such they may not work too well for self-study. Make sure that you don’t just buy a given book because ‘school x’ uses it as their textbook. It may work well within the context of that course, but it may not work well for independent study.
