I am motivated, and want to know if Brown would be impressed or not,

I am a incoming Sophomore in High school, I go to private jewish school with subjects in religion and secular studies. Contrary to public opinion my school 'Yeshivah of Flatbush" leaves much to desire and I need something more to push forward my college app. Despite my hectic schedule from 7:05 AM to 5:30 PM, plus the homework and studying, I have devised a plan below for this year alone, for my extra academic stimulations,

Most people tell me I’m crazy, but if this is what it takes to get into Brown, I am willing to do it. I would describe myself of high intelligence, primarily in mathematics, and politics, however I am also a history buff and avid reader of good literature. But at same time you won’t faint out of shock when you meet me. I am deaf and thus a year behind in speech learning, which is pretty amazing considering I have won 6 awards in debate and model congress last year, see below my plans and attack/criticize/praise/encourage me, after all you’ve read through this much just for my sake, so pat yourself on the back,

Python and MySQL.

Sorry this is really long so I didn’t read the ENTIRE thing but you should just take Math II instead of Math I and Math II as far as SATs go. I also don’t think you should be taking that many APs JUST to get into Brown. Take them because you’re interested in them, especially since you will probably be self studying most of them.
Don’t be a robot… have passion. If you do stuff just for the sake of doing it, Brown will most likely be able to tell through your essays.

I am very passionate about everything in the above with the exception of ap psychology and ap art history, but those are simple AP’s everything else I have an absolute passion, I am very ‘cultured’ and exposed to many things and passionate in all of those areas,

and you’re right about the SAT 2’s Math 1, and also other people said don’t take extra SAT 2’s that are same as AP’s since thats just hogging tests,

thanks!!!

Wanna be a more interesting programmer? Learn python. It’s beautiful, simple, and quick. And actually used. You’ll get plenty of large, ugly languages like Java/C++/etc. once you’re in college. Learn the beautiful, elegant (or just unique/high-demand, but low-supply) languages (ruby, python, ocaml, php, etc.) on your own time. You’ll be more unique, and enjoy what you’re doing more.

It’s ambitious, yes. You will need to do well. We don’t know your gpa, leadership or achievements yet. Many kids stretch themselves for a particular college- but don’t forget that the results show your goods. So don’t blow it. Be willing to rethink lesser classes to achieve top stats. If your school isn’t as great as reputed: colleges will probably know its reputation, not its reality. Be careful not to alienate anyone at YF with attitude. You want great ref letters. (Ideally, they will mention your stellar accomplishments, great school spirit, committed involvement…despite your challenges.) Along this line, no more posts naming the school; this may id you.

Brown has alumni interviews, not on-campus. Think of how you will master this. Also, re: ECs. Brown is, like so many, very interested in com svc and quite proud of what current students do in the community. The next two years offer a perfect opportunity to do something for the deaf- mentoring, assisting adults in some way, etc. And, find safety schools you could be happy at.

wonderful advice!!! and if you teachers are reading this, you know the most recent comments are the most sincere and I gotta say you guys are the best in the world!!

truthfully they know what I mean, I am happy with the teachers, but it’s the kids who make it a drag and it’s a specific sect in this jewish community that do so, not to be stereotypical (there are exceptions but the majority do speak louder than politically correct mind)

and absolutely I am applying to about 10 schools, and know that rejection by any of these schools is not in anyway related to failure in life or measure of intelligence, the last bits have me really thinking,

wow this must have been one of most articulated and straight talk comments on CCer so far!

I am blessed to be in contact with such wholesome people!! Thank you very much!

@chsowlflax,

you seem to know quite a bit on programming, would you recommend Objective C? I Know C programming decently enough and want to move on eventually to cocoa,

Did you look at the Jewish community at Brown? I believe it’s pretty strong. Providence also has a large, active Jewish population. Also, a school for the deaf- your app could mentions some idea of volunteering there. I don’t know how important any of this is to you personally, but you try to create a picture of a vibrant, engaged kid. Best wishes.

Thank you Lookingforward!!!

a jewish community is nice, but not a major factor in my college selection, first I just want to get accepted to my top 10 choices, then i can nitpick at will, and great idea about community service!!

I have finished my new updated plan, and want your opinions on this!!! I will be closing this forum soon, so please transfer your attention to the new one, with link attached under

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/999819-i-am-dedicated-want-know-if-college-would-agree-not.html#post1065610377</a></p>

Objective C is similar in scope, from what I understand, to Java. Meaning if you know Java well, and know how to learn new languages, it shouldn’t be that difficult to pick up. I don’t know much (/anything really) about Cocoa, but personally, I think people should understand more than Java and its cousins, and so languages like Python, ML, etc., which are easy to quickly develop in, and especially languages that encourage recursion, are valuable to know.

I would say to shushugah, Calm down.
And don’t describe yourself as “very ‘cultured’ and exposed to many things and passionate in all of those areas.” It’s an illiterate claim.
Rather, study hard and open your ears and learn humility.
Brown is not for pushy people.
Penn is for pushy people.
If you catch my drift.

Hello fellow CCer’s, just an update on how plans have changed for the better and worse,

AP’s: Dropping Psychology, Art History and CS (I prefer C programming, so maybe next year) as i see that this is simply resume padding and unnecessary,

School wouldn’t register for any of these contests, Physic QuizBowl
F=ma exam
WestingHouse Competition

and I personally dropped USAMTS, i admit it was too ambitious for me,

I am not in Model UN, College Bowl, or MSG Varsity,
Forget about MySQL and C++ as well,

and SAT 2’s and Regents aren’t that important, will take whatever I feel proficient in, but it’s not a big priority, mainly I wish to take 2-3 SAT’s by the time I graduate, hence I have plenty of time to split it up,

On the positive side, I just registered for Olympiad Geometry in addition to WOOT (World Online Olympiad Training), since W.O.O.T. has very little Geometry, hence I took care of that,

Signed up for NYU Math Circle Course and Pushkin Academy (both are olympiad centered math)

I am also going to be home schooled this semester, so am considering taking some courses on CTY some other online courses

[quote]
any suggestions? [/quote[ and tutoring from Physics Professors I know. Any questions or “See I knew it!!” comments are all welcome, Thank you guys for giving me hope and support, your comments really had deep impact both consciously and subconsciously. Thank you, :)

You sound like you’re becoming much more reasonable with your aims. Definitely consider CTY for online courses - they do a great job. Just remember that it’ll be much better to get 5s on four or five AP tests than get 3s on ten of them.

Hello Folks, this is my new account, I’ve changed quite a bit, and I look with amusement at these previous threads I made with the shushugah account.

A quick update, about what I am doing now, I am enrolled in EPGY Stanford Online HS. I am taking 7 courses, I am taking WOOT (World Online Olympiad Training, from AoPS) a 2nd time, in addition to Olympiad Geometry, and mathematical tapas, which really widened my horizon on set theory and topology.

Despite considering math to be my forte, in retrospect, I realize, I didn’t and I STILL don’t know ANYTHING about mathematics. I was fooled into following the typical math sequence that colleges offer, you know, calculus, Linear Algebra, MVC and then Differential Equation, however I personally found set theory, analysis and dabbles of topology much more abstract and tasty for my personal interest.

I’ce taken many more math courses, read more books, and even wrote several lectures, thanks to a fellow CCer Shrig94 (who was the first person to comment on my original thread…) http://onlinemathcircle.com/wp-conte…-induction.pdf

I was naive in my fetish for AP’s and contest awards, in fact I’ll be upfront about it…I suck at contests, and did pretty bad in ARML on NYC Math team, and also did mediocre on the AMC…not even making AIME. However, that didn’t deter me, I prefer Olympiad problems, and while I don’t have any official contests to back it up, my lectures and time spent online reflect that interest.

I am intimately involved with scouting still, and am very active on international level. I frequently host Colombian scouts who’ve I’ve met on 3 separate occasions, and now I am making plans for scout conclave in Ghana.

Since I am no longer in my hebrew day school, I am not allowed to participate in the Debate League, ironically I am allowed to serve as an assistant coach, and so I look forward to coaching my team, and improving on areas where we could improve in (such as spotting logical fallacies, and how to call of true but irrelevant premises).

I don’t think I’m much smarter, except perhaps a little in math, but I certainly am a lot more aware of how dumb I am. I will always be available to parents, or students, looking for advice on what NOT to do, EPGY, or Math in general, or anything else you think I may have a voice on.

There are more personal aspects to my life, but I’ve forfeited enough, and you can find my name and all about me on the web, based on the math link I sent you, hopefully you’ll read some of it too, :/
