I am the only one with such stats???

Hi ppl
I am from Uzbekistan and I am trying to get into Lehigh and Bucknell Universities.
Application package is almost ready to be sent.
Today I have found out my December SAT scores - not very promising but anyway here they are
Verbal - 560
Maths - 630
(I gather my major enemy at the exam was lack of SAT experience - I am a novice to it - and lack of time. If I take it again in January, by the time new scores reach admission offices of desired schools it will be too late, so there is no need.)
Is it high time for me to abandon any attempts to get into?
Well here is the continuation of the story
2 years of non-degree study at Westminster International University, an internationally recognized university in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Grades are not very high but anyway I passed all of required modules.
GPA from an Academic Lyceum (equivalent of a secondary school) - about 96% [I doubt legitimacy of the method by which I calculated it =)]
Volunteer work. Part time job. Nice recommendations. Essays of tolerable content. Hmmm… What else? Some certificates, summer accounting courses. TOEFL I will take next Wednesday… Baseball… Soccer… Not SATII as they don’t require it so I didn’t take it.
Yeah!!! And the major minus against me - no money AT ALL!!! (Not unusal for ppl from Uzbekistan). I will able to contribute tiny amount starting from the second year.
I guess that’s it of me.
And the purpose of all of the abovementioned was to ask you IS IT FEASIBLE FOR ME TO GET INTO BUCKNELL OR LEHIGH??? I would prefer the latter one =)
Any suggestions are more than welcome and I am more than grateful for them.
If anything else is needed to make more objective forecasts about my application, I am ready to provide it upon a slightest request.
Thankin’ you in advance
Westmonster from Uzbekistan.

Hi
Here I am again.
Are there moderators regulating posts in this forum???
If the answer is affirmative, could my previous post - just copy of this one - erased from there, so that I won’t be embarrassed for it every time I log in here. =)
Many thanx for understanding.

I am applying as a freshman

As an American student, your chances would not be very good. The most important part of your application is your transcript, and if your grades are not high, that is a problem. I do not know what the breakdowns for foreign students at those schools are, and it may be a bit of a hook for you. A little bit lower on the SATs may be understandable, but grades at your own home school will be scrutinized. You say you are applying as a freshman but you do have a college transcript so I am not sure how that would be perceived by admissions there.

I contacted admission officer at Lehigh University (silence was reply to the same question from Bucknell admission office) and he said that I was able to apply as a freshman as long as it was non-degree study.
4 of my 25 secondary school grades are 4 (good) and the rest is 5 (excellent) - I counted the percentage and it showed 96% (almost GPA 4 I gather) of achievement. Is it correct computation? 1st year of non-degree study I finished with distinction - average of my marks was more than 60%. The second year was somewhat tough and the results were not that high - mean is 55% (about 2 of GPA).
Does it make any diffirence to my chances of getting admitted???
Well I am somewhat confident about my stats except SAT scores.
Do they play the most significant role while making decision whether to admit or not to???

No, your grades and the type of course you take are the most important things in your app. If they are taking into account your uni courses as to how advanced you are, they will take into account those grades. Also it depends who else is applying to from the former Soviet bloc countries. There are usually some high achievers from there who do well on the SAT, have been in the US for a while, so the competition will be tough, but who knows how many are applying to these particular schools. But, yes, your grades and scores will both play significant roles in the decision.

I just want to say good luck to you, westmonster…you are to be admired for your goals and for your desire for a college education. Your English is quite good, by the way.

“4 of my 25 secondary school grades are 4 (good) and the rest is 5 (excellent)”

If the difficulty of Uzbek education is similar to that of schools in Soviet Belarus, then you are an incredible student  I don’t know anything about the admission process for international applicants, but your grades should definately help you.

Many many thanx for those who made and for those who will make a contribution to evaluating my admission chances - I appreciate your advises and time you gave to me. You injected “hope solution” into me =)
Well, as I gather - generally there are chances for me to obtain a place among international undergraduates who are to be admitted to Lehigh or Bucknell.
As for the difficulty of studying in Uzbekistan’s secondary education institutions - I think that they are fairly in match with other systems of education of former Soviet republics, but with the Diploma of the Lyceum I graduated from I am eligible to take a job in economical industry.
Well, I have got a question - do admission committees set a geographical quota for international appicants?
I know that there is one postgraduate student at Lehigh from Uzbekistan.
By the way, will his performance affect decision of admission office staff at Lehigh towards applicants from Uzbekistan? I mean, do my chances increase if his scores are high and he positively distinguished himself from other students?

Please comment on this - How will my financial need affect my chances?

Hi again
One thing that I want to note cause I think it may matter is that I will specialize in Business administration.
Any difference in my chances? =)

Americans, you already should know former Soviet schools has the same courses for all students (sometimes, one course is advanced).

560+630
is that like 1190??
anyway, apply, who noes, maybe you are such a URM that they’ll take you, remember, i am pulling for u :)

I have a friend who grew up in Uzbekistan! Her mom was French and father American and some how they ended up there. She’s been in the USA for all of high school (boarding) and now college. I believe when she was younger she didn’t attend the “public” schools but had a private tutor.

I really don’t have any advice but I wish you the best of luck!

Thanx for reassuring and injecting some hope in me =)
Now I jest need to wait for April and keep my fingers crossed =)
But any further comments on my chances are more than welcomed =)

Your need for financial aid will be a factor at both schools - neither is need blind for internationals so they will take your ability to pay into account. What are you interested in studying? Perhaps I could recommend a few alternative schools for you where your chances would be higher.

hey my friend who went to the same school as me last year was an international student from uzbekistan.
btw, i like the way you write in english.
