I am totally lost

Hello everybody,
I am an international student planning to pass the SAT in order to come study in USA.
But I am a bit lost in all the features the SAT offers so :

What are (precisely) the differents between the SAT and the SAT Subjects Test?

For example, If I will apply to Stanford or Berkley:

 • May I just take the Maths II or must I take both Physics and Maths II plus the “regular” SAT?

Is there a Computer Science Subject Test?

-What are the average in USA, the good scores and, well, the best?

What attention would admission officers grant to these scores? Are they crucial or nobody cares about it? (I am international)

Will my SATs hide the medium grades I had in my local education system (which is quite different from the US ES)

Regarding to Admissions process what subjects are the best for Computer Science studies / Engineering?

How difficult the SAT would be for a ultra-motivated student who is ready to drop his summer to rules it!

Thanks a lot.

Everything is linked to my College Search / Chance process so if you can take a quick look at my situation it would be helpful thanks!

1° Go to the International Students thread. Several French students have posted there and the threads will answer many of your questions.

2° SAT REASONING = basics, Subjects = more specialized. Note that for French students the ACT makes more sense because it resembles more what you’re used to.
Typically you’ll take the SAT I OR ACT twice, and sometimes 3 subject tests (once). Subject tests are actually good since you’re likely to score higher if you’re in the S track and can take the science subjects.

3° Each university has its own requirement, detailed precisely on their “International Admission” page.

4° Unless your parents have $60,000X4 it’s pointless to apply to UC Berkeley.

5° https://professionals.collegeboard.com/testing/sat-subject/about

6° The SAT does not “hide” anything, it complements your grades. If you’re shooting for the Top 20 LACs, the Ivy league, etc, you should have 15+ average in most subjects. The only subject where it doesn’t matter is EPS.

7° There are many, many more qualified applicants than spots, so even with a perfect record you may not get admitted; what are your matches and safeties?
(match = schools where you’re likely to get admitted; safety = school where you’re sure to get admitted)

8° The SAT is easy. Getting a high score is difficult. A high score for an international would be 600 CR, 700-750 math, 650 writing.

Thanks for your complete reply!

I am trying to build my list of match and safeties but it’s hard when you don’t to do it considering I don’t know which University would accept me, which would do it less surely and which would do it by mistake!

Also, I want to build a coherent list of match and safeties, corresponding to my criterias of University, I want to make these four years incredible and learn a lot! That’s why I linked my Chance and Search topic.

Thanks again!

There is no Comp Sci subject test, nor is it necessary to take computer science classes to apply to college. If you are applying to a university that does not require a specific college admit (larger public schools) they don’t look at a specific aptitude for science. Those schools just want good students who have rigorous classes covering all the core classes.

If you are applying to a tech school (like Carnegie Mellon) they will look more closely at your math/science classes, SAT math scores and SAT II Math/Physics.
