I am VERY confused... HELP!!!

Hello Everyone,

I am sorry for the alarming title but I am really confused. I am an international student and for international students admission to Pitt is not rolling. The university does not offer financial aid either. I sent my application by the March 1st deadline, yet I have some questions. When I filled in the application, I noticed that I was not asked for essays, letters of recommendation, no mention of interviews… So what should I do with these aspects… Is there someone I can call for questions at the University?

After submitting my application, I got an email saying that I needed to submit my SAT scores, TOEFL Scores, official transcript evaluation, secondary school records but still no mention of essays, letters of recommendations or interviews. The email also said that I had till April 16 to complete the application. If I complete the application by March 30th… When will the admission decision arrive?

I would really like to make my application as outstanding as possible and I am willing to send essays, a resume, and anything useful. Should I just go ahead?

I also don’t understand the process of getting into specific departments? On my application I don’t think I indicated any preferences…

I would really like to be admitted to the Honors College, so what stats are necessary???

Below are my stats if you’ll find them useful:

(International Student)

Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Black/African

SAT Score (Superscore): 1590 / If not superscored: 1)1470 2) 1530 3) 1550
GPA:4.0 (weighted and unweighted)
TOEFL: 110

ECs:

Member of National Society of High School Scholars
President of Students’ Representative Council
Debate Club (Officer Position and club member with highest number of club points)
Played for my School’s basketball team
Participated in the world’s largest human pink ribbon for breast cancer patients
I have been on my school’s Yearbook Committee for all four years of high school
I have been class captain thrice through my entire school career
I also received three distinction certificates in the World Education Games (An event sponsored by UNICEF)

Are my stats competitive for the Honors College??? How do I inform the University that I am interested in the Honors College?

Lastly, can documents be faxed?

Thank you very much in advance for having the patience to read this long post. I will sincerely appreciate all efforts made to answer my questions. Thanks once again. :)

Please people, help me out!

Thank you very much for the response. Can documents be faxed to the University?
Do my stats look good enough for the honors college? Lastly, does the University of Pittsburgh have an interview policy for admissions? If yes, can international students request interviews?

When you applied you should have gotten an application ID on the website. You can email OAFA additional info (essay, resume) and reference your application ID saying you want to add that to the application packet.

As for letters of rec, those have to be in a sealed envelope mailed by your teacher. You should email or call OAFA to ask them how to get those sent. Generally you need to give your teacher an addressed, pre-paid envelope for them to put their letter for you into.

When you apply to any university/college you only apply to a school within the college (i.e. school of engineering, school of nursing, school of arts & science). Once enrolled, you sign up for relevant classes to your interests. You have to take classes for at least 1-2 years before you can “declare” your major (i.e. Neuroscience, Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, etc.). However, if you think your HS classes and resume would help you get into a particular school, you can mention your interest in majoring in a particular department.

To be accepted into UHC as an incoming freshman you need at least a 1400 M+CT SAT (or 32 composite ACT) and graduate top 5% of your class. They will send you a letter with your acceptance if you are automatically UHC eligible.

However, even if you are not, you can still get permission to live in the dorm, take the classes, etc.

If you do not get in if you are accepted to Pitt you can just email them asking to apply for the UHC housing (if you want to). Also when you sign up for classes and want to take a UHC one you will just have to ask them for permission first.

Maybe your resume (i.e. list of activities) and your essay. Not the letters of recommendation though, those have to be mailed.

Thank you very much for your response. You said 1400, do you mean only math+CR?
Will my GPA also be taken into account for admission to the Honors College (I have a 4.0)? My school does not have a system of class rank so how will the University determine my class rank? Lastly, is admission to the Honors College holistic? I know I am annoying but please bear with me.

Last thing, does the University of Pittsburgh conduct interviews for admissions?

No, interviews are not required for admission.

Yes…that’s exactly what I said!

If your school doesn’t rank, a high GPA will probably suffice. My school did not rank either and I was still accepted in with a high GPA.

There isn’t really admission beyond the fact that you can sign up for things without permission. That is the only thing “getting into the UHC” lets you do. If you are not automatically admitted into the UHC you can still do ANYTHING that they offer, you simply have to ask for permission first.

So- if you want to live in the UHC housing, simply email asking for permission to apply.

If you want to take a UHC class, email asking for permission.

If you want to join a UHC club, or attend a UHC event, just show up!

Thank you very much for your responses. I am finally done
with my questions.

That’s is a very good qualification you have there. Definitely better than mine. I had a 3.60 when I was admitted and my TOEFL was 101. I’m sure you’ll be able to get in. And yes, I had to write an essay when I was applying. Maybe they changed the policy or you got your info from an unreliable source. Anyway, just thought that I should give you a heads-up. International students have to sit for a English admission exam and that will determine if you are eligible to skip Workshop in Composition and get into Seminar in Composition right away.

Oh really… I am so happy right now. Thank you for the heads up.
You were able to get in to UHC as an incoming freshman?

No they didn’t offer me a place in the UHC college & I didn’t know we can appeal. I think the only difference it will make to be in UHC college, rather than taking UHC classes is you get to put that in your resume.

Wrong. There is no such thing as “UHC College” and no one puts it on their resume. UHC is a collection of students who are interested in broadening their academic horizon. ANYONE can get permission to live in UHC dorms, take a UHC class, and attend UHC events. As a freshman getting permission (if you are not automatically UHC eligible) is pretty easy, since the dorm is large and the classes too. As an upperclassmen, you just need a 3.0 GPA average I think (maybe a 3.25) and that makes you eligible to apply for upperclassmen housing and take the upperclassmen classes.

I see. Thanks for correcting me, AwesomeOpossum
