I’m bisexual and I applied to practically nothing but North Carolina Universities. I’m from New York, my family appears to be permanent moving south. My brother got a job at a University in Florida, my mother will be working in Charlotte, and my sister goes to UNCW. However, with the passage of House bill two in North Carolina I can’t even think about living in North Carolina or funneling.
I feel lost, and scared…
One recommendation I’ve heard if you only applied to schools you don’t want to go to is to take a gap year then apply next year to schools in different states.
The city of Charlotte and probably many of the universities in the state are probably much more B-friendly than the state as a whole.
You did not apply to any SUNY schools? SUNY allows non-resident students to get in-state tuition if they attended for at least two years and graduated from a New York high school within the last five years, according to https://www.suny.edu/smarttrack/residency/ .
I’m not saying that things won’t be difficult in the South and in North Carolina specifically - those bills were a blow to the LGBT population in NC and everywhere, honestly. But college towns tend to be far more liberal than the rural areas of the state, and if you’ve applied to be in one of more urban or suburban universities - the Research Triangle (Durham/Chapel Hill/Raleigh), or Charlotte, or even Wilmington, you’ll probably be more okay. If you applied to some rural universities (like Appalachian State), you may also be okay, but it kind of depends.
Can you try to visit?
My opinion is that people should vote with their feet. If you have another option, use it. Or take a gap year and apply elsewhere.
Which NC schools did you apply to?
If you applied to schools in the Research Triangle you will be fine. Raleigh- Durham- Chapel Hill- Carborro. I am pleasantly surprised at how liberal the Chapel Hill area is. I would stay away from the schools in rural areas of the state.
It’s really not a big deal. I think the whole thing is overblown. As people have said, the triangle and Charlotte areas are fine, and to add to the geographical coverage of this thread Wake Forest (my school) released a statement today calling attention to the fact that they are a private university and the bill doesn’t apply to them. I really would not be worried if I were you.
@twogirls I applied to UNC Charlotte, Queens University of Charlotte, and UNC Greensboro. My sister wants me to apply to UNC Wilmington.
UNC Charlotte should be fine as well. I think W will be too.
It’s too late for you to apply to UNC Wilmington. The deadline was February 1st. But you would be 100% fine here regardless.

Ahhhh. If NC voters this November have common sense, you shouldn’t be worried about coming down here. Definitely do apply here.
Unc asheville is in a “hippy” area and quite liberal. Have you looked into warren wilson in the same area. Visit and see how you feel. Starting in January should not set you back much. Also you probably will be quite fine in the other schools you mentioned you were accepted to. Just quickly apply for another where you feel more comfortable and then transfer if you want or stay where you are. A college semester is only 16 weeks.
Please don’t be worried, NC is very accepting despite what our state legislature may have done. We love our LGBTQ+ community. As long as you stay in small city or large city setting you should be fine. People everywhere have differing opinions but in large places such as Raleigh and Charlotte you are perfectly fine, remember this all started because of Charlotte’s Bill that allowed for people to go to the restroom for the gender that they identify with.
