@1214mom , that is a beautiful bag and I love the color! Good to know about the suede, too. The only hesitantly I might have is the stamped name vs. a metal logo. When I was researching purses to buy for my DS’s girlfriend for graduation, I was looking at small KS purse. It had the stamped logo and someone wrote a review how theirs wore off and they thought for the amount of money, they should all use metal logos.
It’s a very classy and kind thing to buy a gift for your son’s girlfriend. If I could make one observation, though, this thread shows how personal and varied taste is. Although most have been polite enough to refrain from commenting publicly, much of what is described is wonderful to some and quite ugly to others. IOW, buying a purse for someone else can be risky because it’s an assumption you know their personal style and taste and they might feel an obligation to wear something they don’t like. My step mother (who I adored and want to please) bought me a purse for Christmas once and I very much appreciated her intentions but very much hated that purse I felt I needed to wear for years when she was around.
@milee30 , I actually had a thread about this last May. I gave it to her with the gift receipt and stressed your points. She said she loved it and kept it. Who knows if it’s true, but it was a basic enough purse. I just actually bought the one in truffle.
Nice looking bag. I got my first Michael Kors purse last year and have been pleased with how well made it is. The one you are getting looks very functional and roomy! I wouldn’t mind having one of those myself!
On a different note, have any of you bought a knock off? Would you? Do you have moral issues with it? I’d love to have a Gucci but I refuse to pay $1,000+ for a bag. Even the fakes run in the hundreds, if they are very well made.
I’m not really a “handbag person,” but I did have a Michael Kors purse-black, very simple -that I loved. DH bought it for me years ago (D2 actually supervised) and it was still in very good shape until last year, when someone busted out my car window while I was on a bike ride and stole it.
I had locked my wallet in my glove box and rolled up the purse and put it under the passenger seat, but the thief was apparently on to me.
This thread makes me want to look at purses
I would never, ever buy a knockoff. For many reasons.
They’re often easy to spot. Then I’d look really bad.
IMO, they’re lower class. YMMV.
The fancy bags are expensive in part because they are so well made. They also get a premum for their name, but that’s OK.
I’d rather use an authentic – oh, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Fossil, Dooney and Bourke – than a knockoff of Gucci or Chanel or Louis Vuitton.
In my circles, the very fancy brands are not expected or coveted.
I have a couple of Michael Kors purses. One is a smaller black one that I really love. The other is a burgundy tote style. It’s OK…but I don’t love it.
I’m not a fancy purse person. Right now, I’m using a light grey Born leather tote and I really love it.
Darn, when I looked I don’t see a backpack deal on Kate Spade. I mean there is a sale, but don’t see a backpack in the deals.
I would not touch a fake with a long pole. There are many reasons for that. I am not into handbags ? that much, but I do know a great deal about various designers and brands.
I love handbags and I have quite a few, but only a few that I actually use. I wouldn’t buy a fake. I like older Coach bags, Kate Spade and Brahmin. My husband bought me a Burberry tote that I use for work -it’s really a catchall for my life. I would love a Dior or Chanel bag but don’t have the lifestyle that requires that - or the income that would support it! They are beautiful to look at, though.
I’d love a Chanel bag but worry about wear on the lambskin. So pretty, though. I love to treat myself to window-shopping on the internet every once in a while.
Edited to add: wear is not the only limiting factor, but it’s pretty much a deciding consideration given the price relative to my means. Still, window-shopping online is free!
Chanel caviar is very sturdy. My wallet on chain has been through pouring rain and all sorts of abuse, and it is still looking OK except for the leather piping on the edges. I need to take it in for some Chanel “spa.” That said, I am not a fan of bigger Chanel bags (bigger than a mini) because they are heavy. I can see why coated canvas is a big sell… it is lightweight.
I finally decided I would like a bigger than a wallet designer bad and I am trying to hunt down a Catogram tote, but good god the resale ones are 30-50% more than the retail price! Outrageous. Dang I missed it when it was in the stores.
My high end dream want is a Goyard tote. It’s never going to happen. While I might splurge on a bag that is a few hundred dollars I’m never going to pay four figures for a purse.
@mom60, I just bought a Goyard tote for my D. They are used by many of the female executives at her company and she really wanted it. She could definitely afford to buy it herself but never would have. We took a mother/daughter trip to Paris recently and went to the shop there. It was quite the experience!
@abasket I was looking at the KS backpack deal yesterday but decided to wait a day before committing to the purchase. The backpack deal, which was actually pretty good, is no longer there.
I would like to get a lightweight backpack to use for trips so I’ve been following this thread. I’m debating between getting the Rebecca Minkoff backpack or the Baggalini one. I have both in my cart but can’t make my mind up. I may end not buying either so the search will go on.

Those bags are both cute, @AnAsmom! Particularly good price on the RM one.
I have a Chanel tote bag (a real one), and an exact replicate of it (no one could tell the difference from outside, the inside lining is not as nice) that I use when I travel.
Both of my kids have taken a Chanel bag from me. I will start passing on my bags to them as I get older.
For me it is nothing better than finding a beautiful bag to have (maybe shoes).
@oldfort , I’m strongly considering getting a Gucci dupe. Where did you bet your Chanel?
