I can do a handstand. Does that increase my chances????

ok so this is how it goes.

Asian male.

I’m not exactly sure how Columbia calculate’s GPA, because our school has honors points and stuff for honors and AP classes. but…

From 9-11- 3.9 weighted 3.8 unweighted
I didnt add .5 to any honors… just to my APs not sure if its supposed to go on honors

I think its a tough course load, but i’m not really the judge. ALL HONORS and APs with the exception of 1 that didn’t have honors.

Rank 85/615 - Its the top 13 or 14 percent i belevie. Its a really competitive school 2nd best in state- i have a 95 numerical average… but I am trying to jump to top 65 this semester.

I’ve taken/taking 7 APs
-AP World-3
-Ap Chem-4
-Ap bio-5
-AP calc AB
-AP microecon
-AP macroecon
-AP Physics B

All my other courses are honors with the exception of two which they didn’t have honors.

SAT I- 2050/2400 1410/1600 math-780 reading-630 writing-640

SATII- Chem-680 Bio-720

EC’s
-Habitat for humanity- 10 grade, 11th grade became fundraising chairman and helped coordinate fund raisers, 12th- president- coordinating builds and in charge of fundraising
-academic bowl- 9,10,11,12- Went to national championships in QUiz net (an online tournament) won in tenth grade, runner up in 11th.
-Tennis- 9th grade JV- couldn’t make it any year after- our team is number one in state for the past 3 years. We practically recruit kids. But I have played for my neighboorhood from 9-12 grade and have won several division titles.
-Volunteering- Have done alot through habitat, but have logged in 100’s of hours through various community work at cultural functions and events.
-National honors society
-Youth group- we’ve done community service like making food for homeless etc.
-Beta club
-Medical society
-just joined science bowl- looks fun.

-Piano for about7-8 years
-Orchestra 5 years
-Singing Classical music for about 3-4 years

-Then I’ve volunteered over summer at a children’s hospital for 8 weeks, here I was in charge of and managed the gift shop. And i also was incharge of the candy cart, which i went around the hospital handing out candy to sick little children.
-Got accepted into the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program for biology- Very prestigious- only 25 from the state are selected. (6 weeks) Here i conducted reasearch pertaining to personality types vs methods of accopmlishing a task. We conducted focus group. here I was also in charge of t-shirt designs.

 • Went to BIO@tech- a 3 week summer program at Georgia tech- I had to apply to get in.

Did research with **CDC **about the culture of inidia and 1st generation indians- pertaining to malaria

This is a reach school. I wanted to see if i would stand a decent chance.

these parts of your profile will hold you back…especially as an asian and ESPECIALLY the SAT scores…they are WAY too low in the verbal and writing sections…two sections below 650 is insurmountable in my view.

lol…thats a new one…not typically what people do when they volunteer at hospitals…especially if u wanna actually show an interest in medicine which, from your other ECs and the fact that your asian i’m guessing is what you wanted to accomplish there.

chances are slim, class rank, and sats are sub par, your extra curriculars are not eye opening. I think it’ll be very difficult to get in, but amazing people with your stats can make it, it’s just unlikely, sorry, i don’t like to inflate chances.

Welcome to Cornell!

Thanks for the responses, i like the honesty that you guys have. It is a reach school. And to answer the question about the hospital, i didn’t exactly choose that position of being in charge of the gift shop, that’s what i was assigned. But i made the most of it with the candy cart and got to intereact with a bunch people including parents and patients. I was actually going to work in the ER last summer, but was accepted into the governor honors program, and opted out.
