please help. What do I need to do so I can improve my fast reading under timed conditions and also understand the content. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

practice practice practice?

1) Short passages (with only a couple of questions): read the questions first, then check for answer.
- If it’s a specific detail question or vocab question, you don’t need to read the whole passage.
- If it’s a general question, skim the passage instead of reading for detail.

2) Long passages (many questions)
- Read/skim each paragraph as quickly as possible, then sum it in one to three words in the margin in chickenscratch. (Practice this technique so you can do it without effort).
- Read the questions and answer what you know/remember. Go with instinct. If you don’t remember, check back (most details will give you a line number).

This technique should save you a lot of time. In reality, reading quickly isn’t necessarily less effective than reading slowly.

what I do for long passage is I just look at the question first and get an idea what it is asking, then I just read along and find the answer to it since questions do go in order most of the time. Then move onto the next question, read along until I find the answer to that question and answer. One by one. Is this good?

I had the exact same problem as you did, r3n, before I took the AP English Language test. After doing extensive practice for that (which is a lot harder than CR), I, miraculously, found that I have around 3 to 4 minutes left after meticulously going through every question. The point is: practice makes perfect. Go so far as to use AP English prep books for SAT, and you will succeed in raising your speed.

I read the first paragraph thoroughly and answer the questions on it then read te rest of the questions and answer them 1 by 1 after skimming the passage.
