I’ve been stressing about college so much and have been researching a lot of schools these past few years but have had no luck in finding a college that would suit what I’m looking for. I initially wanted to major in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) but I can’t find any undergrad programs for the major so I’ve been leaning more towards Information Technology. I have looked into University of Miami, University of Washington, Florida State University, Rochester Institute of Technology and New York University just to name a few. The thing is although some colleges I’ve researched have my major, many of them are way too expensive or go way beyond my ability of getting in. So I’m hoping that maybe one of you could help me out and either suggest any good programs in information technology/HCI if you know any or really just any piece of general advice you could give me about finding a college, I’d really appreciate it.
Many people here will be happy to help with recommendations but you will have to give a lot more information before anyone will know what School to recommend! You need to provide details on your grades, scores, hooks or extracurriculars, your state of residence, your budget, your preferences in school size, type, location … basically all the pieces that go into finding a fit School!

Is this what your looking for?

Email them since they do have things on human computer interaction. You can also develop your own major per se. People in this school are really creative and cool in my opinion. But as stated you have to be able to get in first.
If we want to eliminate those that are “too expensive” we’ll need to start of knowing where you live.
Look at UT Dallas. If you can get AES it’s very inexpensive.
“many of them are way too expensive or go way beyond my ability of getting in”
We can’t make suggestions until you clarify the above. What’s your budget and what are your stats?
Hi everyone thank you for the responses! My stats are:
GPA: 3.9 (unweighted), 4.2 (weighted), I’m ranked #4 in my class, so around top 3-5%
SAT: 1110 (I know it’s really bad, I took it in March without studying and I’m a bad test taker in general)
State of Residence: Florida
Extracurriculars: I have nearly 300 community service hours and am my school’s secretary for Interact Club, I’m part of National Honor Society, co-founder of our school’s art club, Book fair committee.
Other information: I took one AP class and got a 5, but didn’t like how the classes were structured so I’m taking Dual Enrollment courses instead. Also I know my stats are really bad, for the SAT that’s just on me, but for the activities part I go to a small school that doesn’t offer much to choose from.
Budget: Collegeboard says that my family’s EFC is around $9,000, so my budget is usually paying that much out of pocket, and then paying for the rest of my tuition with scholarships, while trying to stay under 30,000.
I would prefer to go to a more urban type school, but I know that with my stats I can’t be picky so I’m open to anything! But the one thing I’m really looking for colleges to have besides my major of course is a study abroad program to any region in China.
Thank you! I’ll make sure to look into it
You are right, those looking for big financial aid help can’t be too picky. Honestly, with an SAT of 1110 none of the schools on your list are realistic, especially with large FA or scholarships. You need to bring that score up. Try the ACT. Even as an instate applicant at FSU, you won’t be an automatic admit.
A school may not have your exact major but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the education you want by taking courses in those areas, doing an internship or co-op, taking a course at a nearby school that has an agreement with your school (formal consortium or otherwise).
With a 3.9 unweighted kinda hard to think your a bad test taker. Just some test you need to put the time into. Also as stated some do much better with the Act then the Sat. I wouldn’t settle with the 1100.
Look first at your in-state public U options so you can use your Bright Futures $.
With a 1110 test score, this student will not be eligible for Bright Futures. However, I still the the student will get the best financial deal in Florida.
You need to get that SAT score up. That’s the biggest thing. Then you may have to give up the notion of finding the perfect school and look at what is available to you and make the best of it. Seek out people in your target field to talk to and ask them for guidance in choosing your educational path.
You could take a look at the list of no-test and test-optional institutions: http://fairtest.org/university/optional
When you write that you are a bad tester, is this something that you have known about for years? If so, trot yourself down to your guidance office and get yourself evaluated for slow processing and other issues in the dyslexia family. Yup, bad standardized test scores coupled with excellent classroom grades can be a big waving red flag for that kind of learning difference. Pretty sure it is not a learning difference? Then get some help with your test-taking strategies and sort through the possibility of test anxiety. Those have different work-arounds, but testing is something you want to get a handle on before you go to college.

Human - computer interaction is often found as one or more upper level computer science elective courses, which you may be able to take as a computer science major. Many Florida public universities have computer science majors; you may want to check their catalogs and schedules to see if they have the desired course offerings.
I’m an OOS student looking at University of Florida… and I feel its a really good choice. An amazing alumni group and ranked #6 in the nation for public schools. If you want somewhere you can pay, go there. It’ll only be about 20k per year for everything for in-state. However, with you SAT it seems like you may still not make it in… get it a little bit higher and you’ll be good. Also look at Drexel University (near where I live), you could get in, but it’ll be expensive.
Thank you so much for all of the advice and links I’ve received again. I’m going to work hard towards raising my SAT score because really my math score is the only thing holding my score down. I’’ going to retake the test 4 more times before regular decision comes rolling around and I’ll look into taking the ACT along with all of the colleges mentioned. Thank you for the help again, I really appreciate it
