I cannot believe it

Brown Univeristy is ranked lower than even UC Santa babra!!

I cannot believe your reasoning and info source. Pls take a look at [50 Top Colleges](http://50topcolleges.com/Rankings.html) – where is UC-santa babra, not even on the top 50th list.

^You managed to pick one of the few rankings that place Brown higher than UCSB…

UCSB:
ARWU World 32
ARWU National 24
Times Higher Education 29
USNWR National University 39
WM National University 11

Brown:
ARWU World 65
ARWU National 41
Times Higher Education 55
USNWR National University 15
WM National University 63

The ARWU rankings are the most influential, so I will use those for this point. You clearly see UCSB is ranked higher. Many other rankings back this up.

Not saying Brown is lesser than UCSB, I just cannot believe and Ivy League university is ranked lower than a public school with a very large accaptance rate and average SAT score of 1800-1900

“The ARWU rankings are the most influential, so I will use those for this point.”

Perhaps this is true in Hong Kong, but not here.

“I just cannot believe and Ivy League university is ranked lower than a public school with a very large accaptance rate and average SAT score of 1800-1900.”

Then you don’t understand how the rankings are computed.

The criteria used in global rankings (as well as many rankings that attempt to rank nationally but that come from a global perspective) disproportionately disadvantage undergraduate-focused institutions like Brown in favor of research-oriented public universities like those in the University of California system. That apparent admissions selectivity and students’ preferences are in contrast to what the rankings you cite claim to be the superior schools is a testament to the ability of many students to see those rankings’ true value.

^Omg Silverturtle posted in my topic!! I’m reading your grammar guide to study for the SAT and it’ awesome!

Thats a interesting point. I knew that rankings almost never reflect a university’s worth, but I assumed that there was a loose correlation between the two. Guess I was wrong

^I wish I had that kind of influence :)

^thanks for the suggestions, but what really is the revelance of univeristy information sessions with rankings?

^ Welcome to the flawed, flawed world of college rankings. You’d be wise to escape while you can.

zhangvict,

if u are so care about rankings (since u brought up), i don’t know which ranking you will go by.
i advise u go by “fit”, not ranking. Like a company u work with, when u (or they) find u doesn’t fit in, you will either quit or being fired within short time.

When you think Brown is easier than UC-santa babara or even UC-Berkely, because of some ranking info (some are based on graduate school, some are UG …), if if your are luckily accepted by Brown, you will find out it is much much harder than you think.

God bless you!!!

i could make my own webpage that’s called 50 top colleges too and give schools numbers based on no real qualitative or quantitative data. i think i will…i wonder what responses i’ll get…

yeah, if you look at the methodology of ARWU http://www.arwu.org/ARWUMethodology2010.jsp</a> , it’s pretty much a science graduate school ranking, and in that case, I would agree that UC-B is better than Brown.
