I changed my mind... now what?

I don’t know if anyone will know an answer to this, but it’s worth a shot.

For a while now I have been set on studying physical therapy in college. I sent in 6 applications earlier this fall to schools offering a freshman entry level doctorate program (usually 6 or 7 years in length) in physical therapy. I was satisfied with these 6 schools and their PT programs. But in the past few days, I decided that I want to go into orthopedic surgery (so premed) instead. 2 or 3 of the schools I applied to were on my list solely for their PT programs, so I’ve been looking for new schools offering premed.

My question is this: several of the schools where I applied are still on the top of my list after my decision to switch from PT to premed. Since the D.P.T. programs are competitive and often have very limited enrollment, should I email each of these schools now saying “juuust kidding… take me out of the PT applicant pool”? Can I do this, and switch into the normal applicant pool at this point? Or do I wait and see if I get in, then ask to switch out? Should I go back in time and change my mind about this BEFORE I sent out all my applications? :-p

Thanks for your help!
