I Deserve a Pell Grant

But I can’t get one because my mother recieves about $16,000 in social security for my autistic sister.

Although none of this money goes towards my education, the federal government includes it in my EFC. Therefore, I don’t qualify for Pell grants and other governmental aid. It’s so unfair.

Address all complaints to your local congressman.

As unfair as it seems, there really isn’t much that can be done. Realistically, they look at those funds as being available to assit in household bills, etc…which would “free” up other household income to pay for your education. While this may not be factual in every instance, it is understandable…from a political standpoint. Congress doesn’t always understand the harsh realities of having a mediocre income and raising someone with a disability; which sometimes means that the social security funds received maybe replacing a parent’s salary, as that parent needs to devote more time at home because of their disabled child.

Nope89 is correct, your local congressman should hear about your complaints. Maybe if enough students complain about some of the unfair income guidelines, changes will occur.
