I did bad my freshman year of college... help please

Basically i didnt do too good my first year of college and i got a letter from my school saying the entire academic staff will meet with students who didnt do too good. They said me staying at the school is in question. They also said im welcome to come and speak to them to give any info as to why they should let me stay. HOWEVER, they wont answer u on the spot. They’ll send u a letter home on their final decision. Im cool with some of the head of academics but i dont wanna get kicked out. Am i screwed? Ive always been a bit of a slow learner, and i wasnt going for extra help as much as i should have and i completely agree i have no one else to blame but myself. But what should i do? If i talk well enough during the interview, will they let me try and do better sophomore year? Plus i go to a college, n ot a university and its catholic so do you think they may be more lenient…? I have a 1.5 gpa… :frowning: another thing is that i am well known student among everyone, even the upperclassmen and id just gate for it to end like this. This was only my freshman year, i want them to know i will try my hardest next semester! From then and on!! Thoughts…?

I have just two questions, and I imagine it will be their questions as well: You did well enough in high school to get into that school. Why didn’t you continue to do well? What sort of guarantees can you give that, if allowed to come back, your grades will improve?

If you want to stay then figure out what the process is to be given that consideration. Go and talk with whoever “they” are. Make out a written plan that outlines how you will do better next year. Good luck!

I would suggest that you think seriously about what happened in your classes and try to figure out how to prevent that from happening again. My S17 just finished his first year of college at a SUNY school. He did ok, not great and I encouraged him to figure out why. In his case, it was that he was taking required art based classes and he has no artistic ability. However, he could have gone to speak to the professor (same one for the 2 classes he earned D’s in) to see if he had some hints for untalented students, rather than just muddling along and appearing lazy, It might have helped, it might not have. For the future, he has one more art based class and he will go to work with that teacher. After that, his plan is no art electives. There are other electives in his major that don’t involve art and he can take those.

For you, I agree that having a written plan of action when you go for this meeting might help you focus. You can say that you will go for extra help or tutoring, maybe take a class over the summer or winter breaks to keep your load down, change your major to something you will have less trouble with or even look to form or join study groups. Most schools will give a student one semester to get their GPA back over a 2.0, but with a 1.5, that might be hard to accomplish in one semester. Maybe you can set a plan - for instance, you get an extra semester so long as you don’t get more than one C next semester, with every other grade above that. I would pick your classes for next semester carefully - take classes you are interested in or know you can do well in and maybe toss in an easy class as a GPA booster (my son will be taking yoga next semester, both for the physical benefits and, hopefully, as an easy A).

Good luck.

Thanks guys, more opinions are helpful too from anyone else.
