DH was violently puking all night Friday and all day Saturday. I assumed food poisoning from a food cart.
Yesterday I was shoveling wood chips until 4 pm. By 5 I was violently puking. And each time I puked, my lips turned blue. The nurse advice line directed me to the ER.
I was not the only one puking violently in the ER. I’m home for two days with a magical anti nausea drug. And very happy I don’t have the flu.
Although to be more accurate, you believe you don’t have the flu. You could have it in the incubation stage 8-|
My professor in logic used that exact example (except with a cold) on the first day of class as an example of why it’s difficult to prove a negative for certain situations.
Sorry you’re going through this! My family and seemingly everyone around me got sick with a virus – not the flu! – that lasted a good couple of weeks with a highlight of a throat so sore you couldn’t eat for a couple of days. My family resorted to ice cream and popsicles because they go down easy and the cold made our throats feel better for a few minutes.
Most of the time people do not throw up with the flu. Noro virus is going around, now, also, and that is most likely what you caught. Glad you are feeling better.
Influenza is a respiratory disease. Common symptoms:
Fever over 100.4 F (38 C)
Aching muscles, especially in your back, arms and legs
Chills and sweats
Headache
Dry, persistent cough
Fatigue and weakness
Nasal congestion
Sore throat
Nausea and vomiting can occur in association with a high fever – I remember vomiting when I had pneumonia (obviously a respiratory infection) but it wasn’t the nonstop, repeated vomiting that I experienced another time with food poisoning.
The fact that it’s not flu doesn’t mean that it’s not serious – it’s just called something else - gastroenteritis. Like the flu, it can be caused by an infectious virus.
Probably not the flu. The common term “stomach flu” is a total misnomer. Influenza is a disease of the lungs. “Stomach virus” would probably be a more accurate name for what most people call stomach flu.
Also, some people commonly mistake a bad cold for the flu. But once you get real influenza there is no mistaking it. Influenza is to a cold what a mountain lion is to a kitty cat.
@musicmom1215 yeah that’s been nearly the worst part. I have a bunch of red dots around my eyes/eyelids from breaking (vessels? Capillaries?) from puking so hard.
Though second to that, the diarrhea has been epic. I’ve lost about 6 lbs so far. (TMI? Sorry!)
With both serious vomiting and diarrhea it might be bacterial rather than viral - Salmonella is perhaps the most common bug that produces this. Certain E. coli strains do it too.
Beware of dehydration! Sorry you have such a horrible bug.
Years ago when I was staying with my parents my mother and I got a vile bug with terrible diarrhea and stomach cramps, nausea. Also probably TMI, but it was so bad that if I fell asleep and was not consciously controlling the sphincter…had to sleep on towels! Never had anything like that before or since.
We thought it was food poisoning since we had both had a hotdog from a stand, but then a couple of days later my father got it, and he hadn’t been with us to eat a hotdog.
H was sick and we went to the doctor who gave him a quick flu test. With the lovely new changes to my insurance, I had to pay $70 to find out what I already knew - he didn’t have the flu. Next time, he can take the Tamiflu and skip the test. It’s cheaper.
