Hello my name is Chelsea I’m 23 and I have started the application process for admission to the American Academy of dramatic arts. the conservatory requires 2 letters of recommendation for admissions consideration. The problem is I’ve been out of school for a while now I withdrew from my previous university December of 2015 to allow myself time to get in the right head space an figure out what I really want to do and didn’t get close enough with any of those professors (they require you to have to have known the person writing the letter for 2+ years) due to a lot of major changes and a lack of motivation to put much effort into my classes. I also haven’t been in any theatrical productions since 2012 so its been so long since I’ve been in contact with any of my old directors or teachers that asking them would be a reach. I was wondering if I could ask some of my sorority sisters and that be acceptable?? like alumni who weren’t in the organization at the same time as me but we have worked together for a long while and know one another but more so on a professional level rather than as close acquaintances even though we are technically sorority sisters? or what are my other options if any?
Ask the admissions office what kinds of letters are acceptable because of the age of your transcripts and production resume.
What kind of grades did you get when you were first in college? Did you have any classes where you earned an A? Pull up those professors’ names, dig through your computer for any notes about class assignments, syllabi, etc. and whip off a few emails. You don’t have to be super close with a student to be able to writea basic LOR that comments on that student’s academic ability.
No productions at all since 2012? Not even community theater or a YouTube video? If they want a director’s reference, you are going to have to dig one up. So email a few of your old directors and ask if they can write an LOR for you.
I think it may be worth contacting the admissions office and explaining to them your situation, asking them for advice on that matter.
But you may need to be realistic if you’re applying to a dramatic program and have no relevant experience in the last 5+ years. I you have done something related, (but just not a theatircal production,) those teachers or directors may be suitable. Friends? No. See how the school responds.
