I don't know what path to take to reach my end-goal.

Hi everyone,

I’m currently stuck trying to write an essay for U of I at Urbana-Champaign. The question asks, “Explain your interest in the major you selected and describe how you have recently explored or developed this interest, inside and/or outside the classroom. You may also explain how this major relates to your future career goals. Limit your response to 300-400 words”. My goal is to start a medical technology company that develops products, such as prosthetics or drugs, to help the medical field. However, I’m currently uncertain on what to major in. If I pursue a MS in bioengineering and a minor in a business-related field, would that work? If my start-up company fails, I don’t want to be stuck with a degree that I can’t utilize (I’ve heard bioengineering is a difficult field to acquire a job). Or should I pursue a MS in neuroscience instead?

Thanks in advance.

If you are worried about Bioengineering, consider Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

It is good to have a long range goal. Have you thought about what steps you might take to eventually start/own a medical technology company? For example after graduation (either undergrad or graduate) do see yourself working in that field for someone else to get more experience and help fine tune how you want to start the company?

Maybe you might need a technical undergrad degree with eventually getting a MBA because if you are the CEO/COO I would think you would hire folks to do the design. You would just need the technical knowledge (& jargon) to know what they are talking about from a product standpoint.
