<p>Hard to believe it’s already been 30 years. First of the big-time school killers. Brenda Spencer remains in jail.</p>
<p>I moved to San Diego for college a year and a half after this happened. I have a friend that was a student at the school when the shooting occurred. She was not hurt (nor were her brothers or sister).</p>
<p>Then 4 years after I moved here we had the McDonald’s shooting in San Ysidro.</p>
<p>My 14 year old D was watching a show on “E” a few weeks ago and it was a countdown of the worst mass murders. She was so surprised to find out about the McDonald’s one as she has grown up in San Diego her whole life and did not know that something as terrible as this had happened in her hometown.</p>
<p>I thought this was about something else.</p>
<p>Brenda Spencer’s case was somewhat different from most of the school shoot-ups that followed. Brenda was a high school kid who shot up an elementary school that happened to be across the street from her house. Most of the others in the US were high school kids who shot up their <em>own</em> schools.</p>
<p>Oh my – what a sad “blast from the past.” Forgot all about that.</p>
<p>OMG! I just refreshed my memory on wikipedia and read that the Boomtown Rats’ song was based on her crime. I had no idea.</p>
