I dont understand how minors work at FSU

I was looking at the classes you typically take in your major and then it goes into minors and what classes you need. I’ll already have 12 credit hours with my biological science major and then the political science minor requires like 4 more classes. How is that going to the work?

Heres for biology

and then a minor in political science

and also, If english isn’t your first language or primary language at home, Do they test you?
I was born in the united states but went to live with my grandmother when I was 10 months till i was 6 in Dominican Republic (Where my mother is from) I was taught english in second grade. Is that a problem?

It’s pretty easy to understand, it’s an incremental (step by step) process where you have to take certain courses to receive credit as a “major” or “minor” in academic areas like biology.

Generally these courses are at the upper division levels including prerequisites…so there may be more coursework involved than is first apparent.

The courses you get credit for in hs like AP Lit and the like are typically used to meet the liberal studies requirement for an AA degree which is (more or less) halfway to a BS or BA. Everyone has to meet the general liberal studies requirement, regardless of major. So even if you are some kind of art studies major, you still have to pass college algebra and so on (lots of gnashing of teeth sometimes over stuff like this!). Sometimes, AP classes like AP Calc AB or BC can actually give you a real push into meeting requirements for a major like math, chemistry or physics.

I don’t think your English skills are going to be an issue.

Your faculty adviser will guide you through the process and see if you need additional consideration for language skills…but with a SAT score of about 1500/1600 no one will think you are at a disadvantage. ;)

thank you  answers my questions.

I know I’m a bit late, lol, but minors at FSU work differently according to what your major is. For example, I’m a Biology major minoring in Psychology; the Psychology minor requires only 12 hours of Psych. credit, and I am able to complete those credits by substituting them in with my language credits. Since Biology is under the College of Arts and Sciences, it is mandatory to take 12 credits worth of a language, however, since Spanish was my first language, I was able to take a placement test (for free too, luckily) and get exempt from having to take those courses. Thus, I am able to minor in two things rather than just one.

DevilishNole, what do you want to be/do? That major and minor is probably what I’ll be in (but still looking further into it).

I want to be a neurosurgeon in the future. I know, psychology doesn’t seem all that related to it, lol, but it has always been a subject that has fascinated me.

My son just started looked into minors.

If you are a business major and you want an economics minor you only need to take 9 credits of additional economics courses (1 from a specific list) beyond the required ECO2013 & ECO2023 to get the minor. This could be your electives.

If you want to get a business minor, you have to take 4 business courses in addition to ECO2013 & ECO2023 from a specific list. The problem with getting these business courses is they only let the first 10% of each section be for non-business majors for most of the available business minor courses or you have to wait until the 3rd day of class if there are any spots. If you are an accepted economics major, there is a form that can be submitted to request business minor courses so you don’t have to wait to register.

Devil, I want to do something in neurology, but I don’t think I am up for surgery!
