I failed on my grade9 GPA because I didn’t realize how important it is at that time. Besides, I also had a compulsory high school entrance exam which causes me to put more attention to that not my GPA. So, I got 3.22/4 in grade 9…
About my current background, I’m in the student council for 3 years already.
Participated in the World Scholar Cup( a debate competition), I got qualified for the tournament of champions and many medals.

I’m so frustrated and anxious now. What should I do now to maybe compensate for my undesirable grade 9 GPA? Do I still have a chance to go to top20 or 30 colleges? Thank you!
Study hard and get better grades moving forward. That’s what you do. Even with your current GPA, there is a college out there for you.

It’s unlikely you would have gotten into a top 20 college even with a 4.0 in grade 9.
Focus on what is realistic for you now. You can’t change the past.

Just curious, are you a US citizen, or a US permanent resident? Or are you an international student hoping to attend a US college? The reason I ask is that if you are an international student who is not a US citizen or permanent resident, your odds of acceptance and chances of getting financial aid are greatly decreased.
What year of high school are you about to enter?
Define failed. You got a 3.22 out of 4. That’s a B+ average.
Getting into a top 20 is very difficult and frankly doesn’t mean much. There’s no top 20 college. There are people that say there are top 20 colleges and there are people like you that believe them.
Millions of very successful people come from just about all colleges.
Look forward, don’t look back. And find a set of schools - reach, match, and safety like everyone.
If your grades have improved, the upward trend will be noted. No, you won’t get into Stanford, but even if you were perfect, your odds are 1/20 anyway.
Apply yourself and you’ll have plenty of wonderful schools to attend.
You want to find the right school, not the highest rated school by some unimportant magazine that has zero influence on anyone’s life.

It’s a B average. 3.3 is B+ per college board. Neither is close to failing.
Did you actually fail a class RoseDeng? If you failed a class ask your guidance counselor if you should re-take it for credit recovery.
If you didn’t actually fail, you just didn’t get the grades you wanted to get now in hindsight. All you can do is work hard for the rest of high school and bring that up. Take as many honors and AP courses as you can (if you will do well in them).
And yes, I agree with @tsbna44. There are plenty of great schools out there and Top 20s aren’t the be all and end all. There are many really excellent schools that would love to have a student like you. Just go in with your eyes open and realize that Top 20 schools are a reach for everyone even the kids with the perfect scores and perfect grades.

You definitely do still have a chance to attend a very good university. Grade 9 GPA will not matter nearly as much as grade 10 and 11 and in some other ways grade 12. You can take this as a wake up call and put in a stronger effort from now on.
Actually, a 3.22 will get you into a “top 200” university. However, getting better grades will help you when it comes to top 100 or top 50 universities. The effort and study skills needed to get better grades will also help you to do better when you get to university.
To say much more we would need to know more about you. For example, if you happen to live in California, most of the universities of California will not care about your grades in grade 9. If you happen to be international or live in Canada, the universities in Canada (including Toronto which is “top 30” on a worldwide basis) will not care about your grades in grade 9. If you live anywhere else in the US, then grades 10 and 11 will still be more important than grade 9.
Put in a stronger effort next year. Keep ahead in your homework. If you are well ahead in your homework this will help you to get a bit more out of every class. If you need help with any subject, then look for help as early as you can. Put in a strong year next year and then see where you are a year from now.

There’s nothing you can do about grades in the past. It’s done.
Focus on doing your best going forward.

I’m an international student from China. Yea, so i guess it would affect my odds of acceptance.
Thanks. There’s nothing i could do to change the past. 3.22 is a part of me, and i should look ahead.
Thank you. That’s really helpful. Top 20 college isn’t my terminal destination in my life. I agree with you. Thank you very much.
Thanks for your kindness. I would work really hard in my grade 10,11,and 12.
3.22 is a part of me and it’s a fact now. I need to look forward. Thank you very much.

Does your school deliver these grades or are you making equivalents? Because your GC should provide a grading scale indicating what % in your school get what grade or score range.
There are 3,700 colleges in the US. If you get into the top 100 (LACs+National universities) thatsvery very good.
Do your best from hereon out. There are US schools that would accept you, but you are unlikely to get “merit” money from them, and will not qualify for financial aid. Do you have someone who can support you to the tune of 50K/yr? That is what the lowest tuition, room, board would be for a public college that would be willing to take you.
