I feel like I am missing out on the college experience by attending a commuter school

I go to my local state college which is also a commuter school. During the school year things can get boring if you aren’t a study bug or if you aren’t working or running a side business or anything like that, and the school breaks are hell because all my friends go home and I’m stuck here because this is my home. This winter break is particularly dreadful. I always think of trying to transfer to a different school for my major but I’m already three semesters in and I won’t be able to apply until next fall.

Why don’t you try to get part time job? Is there anything available on campus? I actually met a lot of friends in college through work, so it might be a good way to keep yourself busy and productive, while still meeting some people (especially if you get an on campus job that tends to hire a lot of students).

Does your school have any sort of clubs or orgs for commuter students? That might be a good way to meet people who also live nearby the school.

I second getting a job, especially if it’s on-campus. I got an on-campus job this year, and it’s been one of the best experiences of my college life!

My school is also a commuter school, but it’s not too bad if you get some good buddies. Some of my co-workers also live on campus, so we hang out for dinner and stuff sometimes. My boss also schedules a lot of group activities for us, like game nights, bowling parties, movie outings, etc.

Also, clubs are wonderful. There are always people there looking to meet others and be social, and there’s also free food from time-to-time. Give it a whirl!

As for the break, it’s boring for everyone. I’m antsy to get back. Just try and do the things you can’t normally do during the school year, like watching a TV show marathon, reading some juicy books, playing hours of video games, whatever. Or try and get ahead with your school stuff if you can. Organize all your supplies, make new folders on your computer, make new OneNote notebooks, etc.

Good luck!

I too attended college at a commuter school in my hometown and I was never bored. I had a full load of classes, worked a lot, had hobbies, and made friends off campus. I wasn’t partying or drinking either. During school breaks I never lacked for things to do because I was constantly getting off the couch to find something to do.
