i feel unprepared for college

i go to a really small high school and im feeling really unprepared for college. i only took my psat for the first time 2 weeks ago (i think i got an excellent score on it and my grades are good right now, i got good extracurriculars) and my school only offers SAT for seniors. can i take it at a different high school junior year? I’ve been doing a hell of a lot of research on my own. (i know 4 schools i want to apply to, my major, etc…) should i go ahead and start talking to my counselor? because she hasnt mentioned anything to juniors about college yet. im actually meeting with her tommorow about college. is it too early for this? what should i do? im feeling really behind on the college planning process. tips? advice? btw im a junior

Most people apply to college during their senior years. Continue taking challenging classes and preparing for the SAT and apply to colleges next year as senior.

If you still feel unprepared, ask for your admission to be deferred for a year and take a gap year.

I took a gap year abroad and it changed my entire outlook on life.

Please message with any additional questions.

my school doesnt really have any “challenging” courses. also there are no Honors or AP classes at my school. btw im planning on going straight into a 4 year college after h.s. im looking at UT Austin, Texas Tech, A&M, TCU, and UNT.

Ok. Continue with the most rigorous courseload you can take and begin preparation for the SAT as soon as possible.

I would also suggest trying to self-study APs, which although difficult will help you significantly if you are successful. Also consider SAT IIs. These will make you a more nationally comparable applicant.

Is that your school policy that the SAT is only offered to seniors? Because that’s certainly not the policy of the College Board, which owns and administers the SAT. Many (if not most) college-bound students first take a standardized college admissions test like the SAT or ACT in their junior year, typically in the spring. You register and pay for the test online. What would prevent you from registering for the SAT at your high school next spring, assuming that your high school will be a test center (i.e. the test will be given at your high school)?

are u saying i should take it at another school this spring and at my school senior year?

at my H.S. SAT is only offered in December for seniors, i feel thats way too late.

You can take Ap exams without the course

The SAT should be available for any student that wants to sign up, period. Again, is it your school policy that the SAT is only offered to seniors? If so, that’s not right.

You should take the SAT in the spring of your junior year at the closest/most convenient location, and if you think that you can improve your scores then take it again in the fall of your senior year (again at the closest/most convenient location) in time to have your scores available for the earliest application deadline of the schools that your are interested in applying to.

Most students (at least in our area) do not even take the SAT through their school. You sign up directly to take the SAT via the College Board website. You can pick a testing site, and it does not have to be your school at all. You pay a fee and get your registration info off the website. Lots of students want to take the SAT twice because they aren’t totally happy with their first score, so you definitely want to register to take it in your junior year at least once. My kids took it in something like March and May (can’t remember the exact dates it is offered) so all their testing was done in junior year, making it easier to decide what colleges to apply to.

This is a normal time to take the psat so don’t worry about that. If you do really well then you likely only need some SAT practice tests to prepare. But if you don’t perform as strong as you want, then start to do some SAT prep. One way to do some prep indirectly is to do a lot of classic reading of the type they give in HS lit classes. Read whatever isn’t assigned for your classes. Easy to get suggestions off the internet ‘High School reading list’. Edith Wharton, Kurt Vonnegut, etc.

It is worth it to take arrangements to take the SAT in spring of Jr year. You will get a better idea of what level colleges you can go to. Also you can retake in Fall if needed.

Start looking at colleges and reading about them with a mind to putting together a list by spring. It is a bit early now to talk to your GC to pick colleges, you don’t know your psat or how your grades are shaping up. Talk to your parents about what money is available, so you can plan for colleges you can afford.

You can start working on your essays over summer.

What else do you need? Are you asking about being prepared to apply for college or to go away and study at college?

to answer your question, im asking about being prepared to apply for college

For a typical student, they would take the SAT for the first time in the spring of their junior year. If they want to improve, study over the summer and take it again fall of senior year. You can take it at near by schools…unlike the PSAT where the school runs it, the SAT is up to you to organize.
