I feel way too stupid for college. I am a senior in high school and I’m not going to lie, I feel really dumb compared to other students :-<. I have a 2.9 GPA and my SAT is 1070 and ACT 16, but I’m going to retake them in the upcoming two months again. I got accepted to a very good university. Private and Christian, but I feel that I’m not going to be college material and I’ll fail. Can anyone give me advice or something??
Private and Christian? Are you talking about Grand Canyon University?
As for advice, study for the ACT so you can get some scholarship money. I myself will take the one on April 18th and I’m only using the free practice tests. Any questions you get wrong can usually be found online.
^^ If he/she is a senior it’s to late to retake, unless they are considering a gap year?
Your stats are quite low so understandably, you are concerned. The national average SAT is a 1500, and ACT is 21-22, and your scores are considerably below the mean. However, in my opinion, if this private christian school didn’t think you would be able to be successful, they wouldn’t have admitted you. Just work hard, do your best, seek help when you need it and all should be fine. You should speak to your GC about your worries, and maybe you can do some sort of summer college preparation program to boost your confidence a bit? Otherwise you could always do some self studying over the summer. When you get to school in the fall they may ask you to enroll in some remedial courses if they think you’re of serious concern.
It’s not too late to retake it. I myself am a senior and a few reps from the college I’ll go to have encouraged retakes.
@stugace, hmm I guess it depends on the school then. I know all the schools that I have applied to do not accept tests beyond the February test date for seniors intending to matriculate the same fall.
Thanks for responding. I’m going to take the tests again and one is coming real soon. April 17 and one in May 2. I’m going to try my hardest and study to boost my score. I NEED to. I hope I can do better so the college can see that I really do want to go there. But wait, if you take the SAT/ACT again, how they do they calculate your scores?
@seniorflaves What do you mean how do they calculate your scores?
Every test is scored individually, so your previous scores will not affect that.
@wonderfulreads. When you retake the SAT again, how do they determine your new score? Because I’ve heard that they take your better scores in each category and that gives you the better score
@seniorflaves That is called superscoring where if a person takes the SAT multiple times, some colleges take the best score from each section and add it together.
For example: if your first SAT was 1500 (500 Reading, 500 Math, 500 Writing) and your second SAT was 1800 (700 Reading, 700 Math, 400 Writing)
Then your superscore would be 1900(700 Reading, 700 Math, 500 Writing)
You got accepted to a great school. I wouldn’t sweat the testing at this point.
Your GPA isn’t high by CC standards, but in the “real world” of high school it’s right in there with lots and lots and lots of other kids who will also be attending college in the fall. And you’re well, WELL above quite a few college-bound kids from your school and from every school.
That “very good university” that accepted you did so because they believe you’ll be an asset to their student body. They could have rejected you and taken someone else, but they didn’t. The believed all those good things said by the people who wrote your letters of recommendation, and they accepted you. And they know what they’re doing; those people have jobs in a competitive economy because they’re good at what they do.
Trust them until you can learn to trust yourself. There’s no reason to think you’ll fail in college. You’ll be taking courses you’re interested in, and taking a huge step towards adulthood. You are the master of your destiny. If you start to struggle in a course, you’ll need to take the appropriate steps-- form a study group, find out your professor’s office hours for extra help, get a tutor, whatever. You’ll have to get your work done well and on time, without mom and dad nagging you about finishing your homework.
But you’ll do it. You’ll do fine and be hugely successful in college. You care enough to worry, even after having been accepted to a good school.
Deep breaths. You’ll do just fine.
