I forgot...will SOMs accept AP Calc for math?

Since my son was an eng’g major and minored in Math, he had plenty of math…so I don’t remember the answer.

If a premed has AP Calc credit…AB or BC…is that enough for med schools. I’m guessing that the few that might want 2 semesters of Calc won’t accept AB to cover both…but what if student has BC?

And if a student has AB, will that cover the req’t for one semester of Calc.

If not, will stats then substitute?

Only a very few school require 2 semesters of calc. (Harvard dropped its calc 2 requirement recently. IIRC so did JHU.) In fact, very few med school specify calc 1 as a requirement at all. (Most just say one year of college level math.)

Some/Many med schools will accept AP for Calc AB or Calc BC for 1 of the expected math credits.

The student still needs to take stats. (Both because stats is included on the MCAT and a number of schools specifically require stats/biostats as a pre-req.)

But pre-req policies vary from school to school. The best information will be in MSAR or an email to the admissions office. Some schools will want 2 math classes taken during college for admission.

I would ask med. school(s) adcoms. My D. did just that for both AP Calc and AP English Lit.

@WayOutWestMom

that’s what I was thinking…stats.

@miamiDAP I agree, but the student is only a frosh, so…

“but the student is only a frosh” - In this case, it is way too early. The Med. School requirements change. That is why pre-med needs to stay flexible.
I can only tell what happened to my D. She had completed ALL requirements by the time she applied to Med. schools. Then AFTER she applied, her pre-med advisor (D. was forever thankful for great pre-med advisory at her college) warned her that one of the Med. Schools that she has already applied, changed their requirements, they added 2 more classes. Great that D’s senior year was planned to be much lighter to have time for the Med. school interviews. Not only D. applied to this Med. school already, she also had registered for the fall semester of senior year. Needless to say that her registration went down the drain. She dropped one of her minors and added required classes. She had to “walk” into some classes as they did not have spots at registration any more, but pre-med advisor has helped her with that also. Any way, this Med. School was D’s very first acceptance, the dean of admission called her personally about 30 min. after the midnight and it was only few days after her interview there. Ironically, she turned them down at the end.
So, as a freshman, plan as much as you could, but be prepared to change your plans. I would say though that Math and English requirements are much more stable and it may still be a good idea to ask adcoms about them even in a freshman year. The additional requirements in D’s case were Anatomy and BioChem. While at Med. School, D. mentioned that she appreciated having UG Anatomy class, it helped somewhat as most of it is very difficult vocabulary.
D. also mentioned that she feels that Stats are absolute must to have for pre-med, while Calc is basically useless. Her Medical School Research project required D. to work with the statistician. She met with him multiple times. I cannot imagine how she would communicate with the statistician without have any Stats background.

It also depends on how the AP credit is recorded on the transcript.

@iwannabe_Brown Can you give some specifics?

The AP credit has be listed on their college transcript as credit for a specific course offered at the college.

IOW
AP calc AB – Mth 211 4 credits

NOT
AP calc AB --4 credits math elective

NOT
AP calc AB – 4 credits, fulfills math requirement
