I give - what does it mean

Ok - I have to ask …what does "bump’ mean … on these posts?

It means bring up my post (B-U-M-P). By posting something, it jumps the post to the top of the board.

I also think people use it when no one is paying attention to their post (like some of those jerks who post chances threads for EVERY school, including the ones where they are obviously way above the required stats to get admitted). Even if it is at the top of the threads for that school, it puts a more recent date on it so people might look at.

Sometimes when someone has asked a question that has been answered in a previous thread, you can just “bump” up the old one for the new person to read. Saves a lot of repetition.

Thank you!!! I feel like I have the secret code now …

I just thought it meant to push the post back onto the first page. I didn’t know
B Bring
U Up
M My
P Post

and I’ve been on discussion boards for 10+ years! I wonder if someone figured out the letters did indeed spell out something that matches or if it was used that way from the beginning and then shortened?

^^^ lightbulb moment :-)

Then what does “10 char” mean?

cc won’t let you post if there are less than 10 characters in the line.

Some people write ‘10 char’ to fill up space

^^^ then why bother to post?

^ If you have a one-word answer, like “no,” you can put in 10 char to fill up space. Or just use the space bar several times!

or…

oh-------!
