I got a 770 on the SAT Math? Should I try to get a higher score?

I got a 770 and I was wondering if I should try for a 790 or 800? Do the 20 points really make a difference for admission (for more competitive universities)? Or do colleges see 770 and 800 as pretty much the same?

To answer the title question in a word: no. Don’t retake it. 30 points will not break your admission.

a 770 is a great score on any section. However, 800 and 770 are different and ARE looked at in a different way.

However, a 770 is more than enough to be considered competitive at all schools (Besides Cal tech).

I believe that (assuming you’ve only taken the SAT once) it’s better not to take it again. At least I hope so. I want to believe that colleges don’t want kids that freak out about tiny test score differences and waste another Saturday morning taking an exam.

Top colleges know that the math section is really easy (for math/science inclined people, anyway). If you come off as a mathy kind of person and you score lower than a 750, that’s going to raise some eyebrows (I would think). A 770 should be fine - that correlates to only one question missed, right? If you can score an 800 on the Math SAT II, then a 770 is fine.

^ Not sure I follow the logic, a 30 point increase from 770 to 800 is no big deal, but a 30 point decrease (to under 750) would be a big deal.

Statistically, you will more likely decrease or stay the same. Don’t bother taking it again. You probably only missed one question. College admissions folk don’t like to accept obsessive students. You have better things to do than waste money and time on taking tests over. With most admissions decisions based on holistic qualities, that 30 points will not matter.

i second what limabeans has said

question: how does it correlate with just one question missed? What is a 790 then??

nevermind, thre’s a thread over this.

Then you did FINE! Please don’t retake it, you might end up getting more than 1 wrong next time as I imagine it is very hard to get a perfect! So please don’t!

i heard that it ****es the colleges off if u already have such a high score and r so OCD that u simply HAVE to have a perfect score
don’t retake it
770 is a GREAT score

Second again exactly what limabeans said. The difference between a 770 and a 800 is only one question, you know. It’ll make no difference. Besides, if you take it again, you can’t guarantee that your other two scores won’t decrease.

You could get a 790 by not answering a question, rather than getting one wrong. The difference between 770,780,790 and 800 is not important. Go do something better with that time!

If you have lower CR reading and Writing scores, and want to take it again anyways, then practice and try to score higher.

Otherwise, just forget about it.

By all means take it again - and then maybe again. Finally write a college essay on how you could not think of anything more productive to do with your finite amount of time in high school than take the SAT again after you scored a 770 in the math section.

If he had lower scores in the other sections that he could easily raise, why not just retake the test and get math up to 800?

I mean, he shouldnt take it again JUST for that
