I got a 89%..

In one of my major classes I got an 89 so I got a B+. However the funny thing is that she said that she will put a bonus question on the final exam. However while I was taking the exam, she didn’t put the bonus question for some unknown reason. Turns out I got a 100 on the final exam but that still got me a B+. If she had put in the bonus question I would have gotten the chance to get an A-, which is huge for calculating my major gpa. I want to ask the teacher if I could change my grade, but I don’t know how to tell her. Any tips?

If I understand what happened correctly, your teacher originally planned to put a bonus question on the exam, but then changed her mind and decided against it. Had she put the question on, you would have had a chance to earn more than 100%, which would have helped your overall grade when averaged in.
I don’t think you have much of a case. Your grade was based on what was tested, and you had the same advantages as everyone else in your class. On what basis would you be able to change your grade?

In this class, the grade is calculated by points and you accumulate the points up. The amount of points determine what letter grade you have (890 points out of 1000 points is a B+) For me, I knew how many points I had and I knew how many points I needed to get an A-. With the final exams and one bonus question, I knew that if I got everything, including the bonus question, correctly, I would get an A-. Although I knew I had a slim chance to get an A-, it was still a chance. That chance is what got through me all day to study my guts off for the exam. I studied day and night for the exam thinking that if I didn’t do everything in my power to get that grade, I will regret it. I’ve never worked so hard in my life for that grade since it was very important to get that grade. However, my hope just vanished in an instant when I saw on the exam that there was no extra credit and I knew that even though if I got an 100 on the exam, I would not get an A-. So even though I got a 100, I was still sad and hoped that my professor would curve the grades. I know that I don’t deserve to get special treatment and the cutoff is final, I was still hoping that if there was still that one chance I could do to change the grade. I know it’s a long shot but I’ve got to try. Hopefully you will understand what I’m going through this.

You can always email her-profs sometimes make exceptions and bump grades up (attendance is usually a factor) (except if your grades are already posted-that can be tricky)

How did you get a perfect score on the final, but only manage a B the entire semester?

Did you talk to your teacher and ask if there’s anything you can do? The teacher, of course, has no obligation to change anything. Extra credit is… extra. It’s a freebie that the teacher can take away if they wish.

If you want to talk to her, talk to her now. Ask her if there’s any extra assignments or anything you can do, explaining why you want the “A,” and you know that your request is a long shot. Thank her for her consideration. Then accept the B- and move on with life.

If the grades are reported, it’s unlikely that she’ll change it.

But, at least you talked to her. Talk to her ASAP. The loner you wait, the less likely she will- or even can- change it.

This is a good lesson learned for you.

You can’t have one letter grade the whole semester and wait until the very last second thinking you can bump up to another letter grade if you get a perfect score (plus some) on the final. Put forth your best effort all semester; don’t hold out until the end of the year.

You learned how to study well by the end of the semester enough to get a 100 on the final exam. Remember those study skills and try harder in the next class. Study throughout the semester as if every assignment, midterm, etc. is your final grade. If you want to bump a grade up, do it throughout the semester by working harder earlier on and steadily. One last “hooray” of improved effort at the end of a semester just doesn’t always cut it.

Besides, a B+ isn’t that big of a deal. You had a B all semester. One B+ on a transcript isn’t so bad. It’s not going to trash your GPA.
