I stumbled across these really cool photos of the renovation of the white house in the early 1950’s.
they literally gutted it and even had bulldozers inside. very interesting. did you know the white house is basically from the early 1950’s? (probably still full of lead paint/pipes…since they still used it in the 1950’s)

bookworm… neither did I! I guess historic preservation was not a big priority in 1950!
C-Span had a great documentary on the White House at the tail end of the Bush ‘43’ administration which included the story of Laura Bush’s renovation of the Lincoln Bedroom. Much of the information was based on a 2 volume history called “The President’s House” by William Seale (published by the White House Historical Association). I bought the books and am a bit embarrassed to say I have yet to read them. I love all those C-Span series on First Ladies, the Supreme Court, the White House, etc.
