Today I saw an autistic kid that I’ve known a few years. When I saw him on my schedule I was like “aw man…”; both he and his mom are difficult. I won’t go into detail, but she talks to him like he understands, and I often doubt he does, and they have failed to take advantage of other resources that should be available to them. Anyway, she starts by saying this will be our last visit because of an insurance change, and I ask him if there is anything he’d like to ask or say. As is often the case, he repeats what I say, then spends the next ten minutes gently tapping his head against the window. As we are about to leave, he says “since this might be the last time we see each other, maybe I should give you a hug”, and he does.He has also been collecting stickers from me when he doesn’t flick the lights, or roll me around in my chair. He collects them, but never takes them home. today he says he will take them, and remember coming to see me.

Didn’t mean to post this in election and politics,

very cool–regardless of where you post! Sometimes they can surprise us in how much and what they “understand” :)

That must have made your day. Thank you for sharing this lovely experience.
