I had a turn around, I want to know if people can think I can get in.

Hello, I am currently a junior in High school, and I want to know if you guys can think I can get in.

A little about me. I used to be one of the students who had no ambition. I received mediocre grades, and I was heavily addicted to computer games. This all changed last year when I taught myself C++. I loved it, kicked my habit, and I was so good with it by December 2012 I was able to create my own semi-artificial intelligence by utilizing random numbers. I also became REALLY interested in history, and I taught myself an encyclopedia’s worth of history. But disaster soon struck. During the months from February to April, My parents became divorced and my house was foreclosed right at the same time. With my parents being out of work for longer then I can remember, the near complete destruction of their wealth, and the fact that I would have to live separately from my twin brother, I entered a chronic depression, and I thought my life would be in ruin. My grades began to drop again, which caused me to sink further.

I was able to get out of it, and get my grades back up to passing. I then became REALLY interested in physics, and hear I am now.

My grades for freshmen/sophmore: 3.0 GPA, unfortunetely being bolstered by un-academic classes.
No extracariculars back then.

Last year I got a C in Honors English, Chemistry, Geometry, ( We swap geometry and algebra II so I took the latter in 9th). I received an A in AP world and got a 4 on the AP test.

I taught myself C++ and a large amount of history

Now: Above a 3.0

I am taking AP Computer Science and APUSH

I was “locked out” of AP english and forced in to normal English because there was no room in my schedule for it.

I am apart of leadership

I started two clubs ( Geopolotics and Computer science)

I am vice president of philosophy club and I am a member of astrophysics club.

I am trying to start a Mass tutoring program at my school.

I am now apart of Science bowl

I can claim legacy through my grand-uncle and then claim legacy to the large amount of relatives ( 16+ people) that went to the school)

I have astounding personal essay material

My Father has some post graduate studies (film) but economically we are between lower and lower middle class.

I have a math teacher at my school ( Have not had him yet, but probably will for AP calc next year)
who went to Michigan, and he really likes me, so hopefully he can right me a really solid letter of recommendation.

I have high functioning autism

I attend an extremely high API school ( 907 ) and it is one of the best public schools in Los Angeles

I currently live in Los Angeles, so I would be out of state.

I plan to take at least 4 APs next year ( AP physics, AP economics, AP government, AP calc, and maybe AP english )

I am trying very hard to attain a high GPA

I self study the SATs, so hopefully I will receive good scores.

Do you think if I work at it, I can get in?

Most likely not. The legacy thing applies more to your direct parents (Mom+Dad). Even with that, there are thousands of applicants who are under the legacy pool anyways. You’re also out of state, which makes it extremely hard. Your GPA is extremely low, probably bottom 5% of the applicant pool. You’ll most likely get deferred if you apply EA. However you always have a chance.

It’s not the end of the line though, you can always go to a difference university or a community college and improve your grades then transfer on over.

But what if I obatain a 3.5 + GPA for junior and senior? Wouldn’t that at least look better?

Aim for a 3.9+ unweighted this year and your senior year and get over a 32 on the ACT and you will put yourself in a much better position.

How can I do this? My family does not make that much money, but I am willing to do the work!

Any other Extracurriculars I should do?

Forget the Extracurriculars. You need the hgihest grades and test scores (SAT/ACT) as you can possibly get

Just work on your grades tbh, your extra-curriculars are decent. Get a 3.8+ GPA (UW) and try to get 2150+ on your SAT/32+ on your ACT, and you have a very high chance, specially if you apply to LSA.

Good luck :)

ah, I would say do what focus08 says and you are a reach, meaning you have a chance; certainly not a high chance. A 3.8, Jr. and Sr. yr puts you above a 3.4. That is not normally anywhere close to good enough, but an upward trend would help quite a bit.

Do go for it.

If you cannot afford the oos tuition, you may forget about the UMich. It is very hard to get sufficient need based aim and you are not likely to get merit aid.

No chance. You’d literally need to 4.0 everything this year, which your history shows is highly unlikely. Completely destroy the SAT or ACT this spring (maybe possible, but how are you going to find time to study when you need to to go from Cs to As in the classroom?). And even then, your only hook is going to be the computer science stuff via some sort of portfolio, which isn’t even impressive at this point. Which means you’d have to dedicate tons of time to coding projects, certifications, etc.

And now your family is suffering financial strain, so you likely can’t afford OOS tuition even if you miraculously were accepted.

Michigan isn’t for everyone. Sorry.

It isn’t worth the effort if your family can’t afford 60k/yr in tuition.
