I hate Vista!!

I’ve had pretty good experience with it (loaded on a new computer). My old computer with XP crashed fairly often–the Vista machine can be left on all night, and for days at a time without crashing. There are a lot of annoying messages asking you to give permission for what you just told the computer to do–apparently you can turn this off, although I haven’t done so yet. The other annoyance was that some of my older software will no longer run. I agree that the new version of Word makes unnecessary changes in the location of common features.

I’ve Vista on a new laptop since July, and not a single crash/blue screen of death or anything. Only device that doesn’t have driver support is a shady Hong-Kong made playstation controller adapter that didn’t work too well under XP either.

Vista Service Pack 1 should be out within the next couple of months, and it’ll clean the operating system up a little bit.

This is what I don’t get. Why release a product that’s NOT ready for the market?

But Microsoft isn’t a monopoly. People have choices of other operating systems (Mac-OS, Linux, other Unix variants, etc.) and other applications (in place of Word, Outlook, IE, etc.). Microsoft succeeded because it had the best perceived value to the businesses and individuals purchasing it.

This comes down to a subjective opinion. If you mean waiting for it to be bug-free, then it would probably never be released. Modern operating systems are complex and there are a lot of variables resulting in some issues - most of which get fixed by subsequent changes. I’ve been dealing with operating systems since before Windows (or MS-DOS) and they all have some problems. As the OS gets more complex as with the current GUI-based OSs, it’s only worse.

You probably mean why not wait for it to be MORE ready for the market than it is (less buggy rather than bug-free). Again, it’s subjective and there’s a lot of market pressure that comes to bear. It’s not unusual at all for software to be released earlier than engineering would like due to marketing pressures. This doesn’t make it right but it’s the reality.

Reviving an old thread just to note that the machine I referred to above finally crashed, but it was because the hard drive died. I pretty much left it on all the time, which was probably not a great idea. But still essentially no problems with Vista. I installed a new hard drive, restored from a backup, and everything seems OK so far.

Not a bad time to upgrade to Windows 7.

I thought about it, but I would like to keep the old computer going for another year or so without spending too much more on it. As it was, I only had to buy a new hard drive, and a new keyboard (which also seems to have died at the same time).

Can’t you upgrade to Windows 7? That’s what we did–went from Windows XP, skipped Vista & now upgraded all the computers in our house to Windows 7, which isn’t as tough to use as Vista. Only dad had Vista in his computer; the rest of us waited to upgrade until Windows 7 came out. It was worth the upgrade to all of us!

If you upgrade to Windows 7, it shouldn’t cost too much & you could have it for your next computer as well. It will extend the life of what you have and make it more pleasant for you.

I guess I’m one of the few who really hasn’t had any unpleasant experiences with Vista. My only annoyance has been the way it is always asking for permission to do things, but I don’t even notice that any more.

It seems that I always have the in-between OS that nobody likes. I had Windows ME, for example.

Hunt, strangely, or perhaps not so strangely, I have had a similar experience. This laptop kept freezing and freezing and I always blamed Vista. When I saw this thread I wondered how I did not post on it, agreeing that I hate vista too! But recently I figured out that my computer freezing was a hard drive issue and probably has nothing to do with vista. When the computer freezes, the little hard drive light stays on solid instead of flickering. So I schedule daily defrags, and for the time being freezing happens much less frequently, and I can live with vista.

(Just figured out why I did not add my 2 cents to this thread. Thread is 4 years old and I only bought this computer 2 or 3 years ago  )

Well, I have Vista on the laptop. I guess I better back up the hard drive more frequently…like right now!

^^ You can change the annoying permissions box (User account control) behavior by a setting. It’s the first thing I do when setting up Vista. From the Start button select ‘Help and Support’ and search for ‘User Account control’ and it should have a link telling you how to turn it off. It was stupid of Microsoft to default to the permissions mode but they were probably paranoid about malware at the time they released Vista. I don’t know if they’ve changed this for Windows 7.

Given the age of your computer I’d wait for a new computer to get the new OS unless you think it provides a major new benefit to you which I doubt it does.

Don’t you like how we can just carry on a conversation after a 4 year break?

If you have college students, there may be free or nearly free Windows upgrade options.
