I have a 2.9, but UCSD now requires a 3.5. What to do?

Well I failed Diff Eq. This dropped my GPA. I think this is also the reason why I got rejected from UCSD even though I have done all my IGETC classes. I have to retake it next semester. I’m already on my third year of community college too. Since I was in college before the 3.5 requirement took effect, would a 3.0 work for me? I don’t even know how I can get a 3.5 by this fall. Anyone have any suggestions? Do I just take a bunch of super easy classes and get A’s?

I’m not sure about being grandfathered in… but I’m betting no.

Unfortunately no, you will have to play by the rules next year  (like me T____T )

Yes, if you have completed IGETC (as you said above) and major pre-reqs, then take some “chip” classes to bring up your GPA. You will not necessarily need 3.5 to be accepted, it depends on your major. But judging by the fact that you take DE, it must be some kind of engineering to go that far, so keep raising your GPA as high as possible. Good luck!

I actually haven’t finished all my prereqs, just most of it… I still need to take physics, that’s pretty much it. I wasn’t really sure what I was doing until last year.

Can’t you repeat the diff eq course and boost your gpa? The A will replace the F.

So retake DE to replace the bad grade, take physics, along with some easy classes like Intro to Psycho, Socio, etc. and fitness classes to boost your GPA. That’s basically it. Don’t take too many units since this 3rd year is only to help you raise your chances at UCSD

UCR and UCM are still 3.0 TAG so you’re still good to go.

lol @ ryan’s post.

winkzy winkzy, when you take Diff. eq. in the fall, the grade you get will replace that F. So if you got an A or B in it you would be in a much better position I suppose.

Dude, also, please consider taking easy online UC transferrable classes that you don’t need. Like snipehunter said, take the intro sociology courses and any other bogus classes you think will be a breeze. You could probably stack up to like 15-20 or so units of these types of online courses with relative ease. Just make sure you check out ratemyprofessor.com to make sure the classes you are considerring as GPA boosters actually will be. ;)

Oh man that sucks. Anyways, leave the past behind. Retaking DE will increase your GPA and make sure you ace physics and I guarantee you’ll get in!

Out of curiosity, what was your GPA before you failed the class and how many units do you have? Depending on how many credits you have, even taking easy A classes might not boost your GPA too much if you had around a 3.0 to begin with.

It sounds like you’re some sort of Science major, and without TAG, a 3.0 isn’t a very likely acceptance in UCSD for a major like that. Don’t listen to the person who said you will surely get in if you retake the class and ace physics… depending on your GPA before the F and the number of units you have, you might have to start considering other schools.

Thanks for killing his motives. He CAN get into UCSD. UCs also look at grade trends, if he shows that he enhanced his academics by a long shot then I think he CAN get in. I had Fs and Ds but I got into UCLA for Engineering with a GPA barely above 3.0. How about that?

Wow. Chill out… I said that it isn’t “A VERY LIKELY ACCEPTANCE”. Did I say that they wouldn’t get in? No. I merely suggested they be realistic and consider some additional schools. Perhaps you had circumstances that set you apart from a traditional student with a 3.0 or you were just a random statistic but we know nothing about the OP. You can’t assume that they are anything other than a standard applicant of whom usually WOULDN’T be accepted with a 3.0.

Regardless, I specifically asked the OP what their GPA was before they transferred so that the people commenting would have a better idea about what sort of competitive applicant they were GPA-wise.

Thanks I actually don’t really expect to get into UCSD. But it would be nice since I live close to the school. Currently looking at UCI and UCSB right now. I don’t know how I will do for those. For some reason I feel like I will get rejected again also, but we’ll see… I am just going to take Diff Eq and some other easy classes to raise my GPA a bit.

Yeah, best you can do is to get your gpa as high as possible. Getting to 3.5 from where you are will require a bunch of 5 unit classes for the summer in order to sign up for a TAG this fall. So, best bet for is to ace that DE class and then take some 5 unit classes during fall for a competitive gpa.

Just wondering… why didn’t you drop the class? I think the TAG doesn’t require students to complete all the courses in progress with a letter grade, it that right?

Anyways, I do believe that you can still get into UCSD. Retake DE, and enroll in tons of easy elective courses (history, music, art, econ, admin. of justice…) Choose online classes if you can. I got a straight A’s in all of my online classes. Also I would recommend you to forget about physics for now, as it is relatively hard to get good grade in physics.

^maybe for spring semester, probably not fall.
