i have a BIG PROBLEM.

I’ve wanted to go to Sterns since the beginning of time. I’ve got the grades and standardized test scores. My ECs and leadership are great.

but…

I got suspended (for one day) for submitting an assignment with vulgar content. Initially, I thought it would be funny, but when I got caught, I realized what a dumbass I was.

Would they turn me down because of this?

I’m also considering schools like UCLA, USC, Berkeley, Princeton and Stanford.

*STERN - school of business

Why would you have…? Never mind. Probably best not to ask.

Anyway, you can always send the admissions committee a letter explaining your suspension, or you could even write your personal essay about it, how you’ve learned from your mistake and used the experience to grow as a person (don’t say you only realized this mistake after you got caught, though, as that makes it obvious that you are only sorry because you got caught). Though I doubt it’s a common occurrence, I really don’t think you’re the first Stern applicant to have been reprimanded in any way, and it’s also not like you’re on academic probation.

I was doing an english assignment, and I did not finish the last few questions. I wrote some BS (with explicit language) on the assignment, while having my friends howling in laughter as it. I turned it in since my teacher skims at the assignment. But when I got caught, I felt very stupid.

But yeah, is this gonna hurt me? It obviously isn’t gonna help me.

Well, like I said, you can send in something explaining yourself. It’s obviously not going to look good on your transcript hence it will hurt you. However, it needn’t bar you from admission. Just handle it diplomatically and carefully, since you can’t undo the suspension at this point (unless you somehow have a disciplinary appeal process that you can go through).

You also have to be very careful about what you say. Just from what you’ve said so far, I could easily assume, even if incorrectly (which I sincerely hope and think is the case), that you had no regrets about what you did until you were caught, and that you are capable of disrespecting a teacher in a wholly academic environment. It’s a question of ethics, something Stern holds in high regard.

The Stern School of Business has so many good applicants to pick from regarding academics, EC’s, and Leadership. There are many applicants that have not a single blemish on their permanent records regarding behavioral issues. So it is in your interest you explain your situation really well!

I know a few friends who got screwed over by that system. One specifically was a valedictorian at one of the top high schools in California had a 2250, was expecting to get into johns hopkins, cornell, brown, northwestern, but not really a good shot stanford.

He even got to apply for regents at ucla and ucsd which is kind of a big deal. so yeah he is a really god applicant. Two weeks before decisons are out in march he gets suspended for a day. Flat out rejected from all the privates, and he was not even doing something that bad.

He is going to Cal now. SO dont be too dissapointed if u have to go to a public school as they do not care. I know a kid who got into Cal Spring with a 3.66 unweighted gpa and he also got suspended 5 times. the uc’s dont care. so hopefully ull get into the public of ur choice.
