I have a major problem...

I have the biggest problem. I’ve been rejected from 5 schools and wait-listed at 1 (Emerson). What do I do? Does anyone know of any colleges still accepting applications? I really need help or ideas or anything…thanks.

Hmm…well I declined Emerson…
(crosses my fingers that my spot will be given to you.)
If you browse the boards you’ll see people posting links of colleges that are still accepting applicants. What major are you looking at.

I really want to study journalism. I just can’t believe this is happening…what boards should I look for schools? (This is my first time here).

have you considered a gap year as an option? or apply for spring semester to publics like UMich which is still excellent school. u can do some humanitarian work or something during this time, help with the tsunami, AIDS…

I know someone who got flat out rejected at Emerson and every other school, took a year off (went to community college) and then got into Emerson no problem. If you don’t get in off the waitlist and don’t find another school you like/can apply to, definitely try again next year.

I know I could take a gap year…it’s just that I’m totally selfish and WANT to go to college this fall. I don’t want to feel left out while all of my friends are heading off to college. I’ve been waiting for college as my way out for the past four years! And I don’t want to transfer - to have to start over and make new friends would just be too much. I had my heart totally set on George Washington and got the rejection letter today. It’s just so much to deal with right now and I don’t know what to do.

My friend didn’t get into colleges at first either. She did a year at Curry College, then was able to transfer to Emerson, which was her pick for Communications Major. Take a look at Curry. I think they might be rolling admission.

Do a search for schools with rolling admission. Ithink there is one in Nevada…

http://www.nacac.com/survey/results.cfm

here is the link, good luck, you will be fine and will find a place

If history is a guide there won’t be much on that link until May 9 or 10, but I’d definitely check it then. One school to look for might be Ohio University. Good luck.

i would take the year off rather than “settle” for a school you didnt want to go to in the first place…my school, U Missouri is one of the best in tha nation for journalism…just make sure you dont apply as journalism, itll decreas your chances of getting in…you can always transfer departments when you get here…IM/email me if you want more info…I think our deadline is May or June 1st.

You can search the collegematch database on collegeboard.com with the criteria “regular application deadline has not passed”. Some large state schools have rolling admissions but you might not get your choice of campuses. I don’t know if they are still accepting applications but Penn State and Rutgers come to mind. Wherever you go, be sure to get involved with the college newspaper right off the bat. In journalism, it’s mostly about proving yourself.

What state are you in and how far are you willing to go?

Also, make sure you follow up on Emerson’s waiting list.

I live in Kansas and actually just applied to the University of Missouri (My dad went there). I’m pretty sure I’ll get in, I’m just waiting to hear. I’m willing to go anywhere - the whole point was that I wanted to get away from home. That website actually didn’t help me that much, there were only about three schools in really random places. I’ll try collegeboard.com. Thank you everyone for your help - if anyone has any more suggestions please let me know!

Have you contacted Mills? They have cross registration with Berkeley which is very close by.

daizy,
check back on the nacac site around May 10 if you’re not enrolled elsewhere - that’s when most schools will know if they have spots or not!

I keep looking up schools, but think I need to just wait until May 9th so I can see that list. I did send an application into Indiana today, though. Does anyone know anything about appealing? I know it’s pretty much impossible, but I have a minor disability and think it got overlooked during the admissions process. Does anyone know of anyone that has been successful in appealing? Will it even get read if I send it in (to George Washington)? Anyway, thanks for your help and suggestions.

Emerson is currently you best bet since they wl’d you. You need to talk to your GC to see if he/she can get any sense of why you were wl’d - and he needs to tell them that you will definately attend (if you will) if you were accepted off the wl. He should mention the disability.

For your part, send Emerson a letter stating your contining interest, and what you can offer them. This is where you can mention the maturity and strength you have gained in dealing with your disability.

Really think about what you can offer emerson! If you have any new acheivements since you sent your app, send those also. If you have a new quarter’s worth of grades (and they are good) send those, too. Many people send an additional rec - maybe from a community service or sports supervisor.

Regarding GWU - appeals are usually based on information that was incorrect/left out of the app. You could send them an appeal letter based on the disability being left out - plus your waitlist stuff. Your GC will need to back you up. It probably won’t work, but, why not try?

One last thing to consider - many of the Canadian uni’s have later deadlines that ours. If your parents are open to it, you could try a couple. The exchange rate makes them pretty affordable even without aid.
