I have a problem

Alright, this is all a bit spontaneous, but I was accepted into The Kiski School about two months ago, but they had no available financial aid for me, so I assumed that I was not going to go there. I just came back from my first day back at my public school, and my mother gets an email that the Director of Admissions wants to talk about financial aid. It turns out that one boy withdrew from the school, and he had a nice hefty bit of financial aid. Guess who that goes to…

me.

The only problem is that I don’t think that this is the best school. I consider myself to be an intelligent person, and this school seems to be very focused on sports. I was planning on applying to Andover and Exeter this year because I think that I should go for the best. If I choose to go here, there is no way that I can just say that I want them to sign recommendations for another school, how insulting would that be?

I would just like your thoughts on all of this. I may not get into Andover or Exeter, and this is really my last chance to apply go good boarding schools. There almost isn’t a point in going to Andover or Exeter if you’re only going for two years, especially since you only get about three months of their education before you take the SAT’s or ACT’s.

Thoughts.

Do you feel your public school education is adequate?

If your public school is a good school, you can still get a good education, and make it to a good college. If you really set your mind to it you can get into Exeter and Andover.

My public school is this run down place almost in a ghetto. I just don’t want to go to my public school, and then find out that I don’t get into Andover or Exeter. I have never won awards or gotten a 4.0 GPA. I have never done anything amazing or eye opening in school. I wondering if that is going to severely hurt my chances. I’m very good with interviews, and I know that I could get good grades this year. I just don’t want to go to Kiski, and then wonder what would have happened if I applied to these amazing schools.

I think you should wait, apply to Exeter/Andover, and then apply to Kiksi again if you dont get in

GO to Kiski. It is a very good school and they’re offering you a wonderful opportunity. A bird in the hand & love the school that loves you. You won’t regret it and you just might set the place alight. MHO

If it were me, I’d take the scholarship and go to Kiski. You’ll definitely get more one on one attention from the teachers, and if it turns out that you are acadmeically leaps and bounds ahead of all your classmates, your teachers won’t feel insulted if you decide to transfer after a year. They’ll understand that you are ready for a different kind of school experience. Kids do transfer between prep schools, and I think the teachers are understanding about that stuff. Everyone says that boarding school teachers are nice.

I think it’s maybe not the best idea to set yourself up to keep thinking “what if I held out for something better?” What if you made the most out of the thing you acutally got? Many kids don’t get financial aid and admission to a prep school.

P.S. I’m an Andover grad and my good friend in college went to Kiski. Guess which one of us graduated college Phi Beta Kappa? Not this dummy!

Accept the offer. It is amazing to receive the offer of a spot, and financial aid, at the end of August. If you turn it down, you’ll always wonder, “what might have been?”

Alright, I made my decision to go. I won’t regret this.

Thank you for all of your supportive and kind words.

Good plan. You can always apply for a transfer to the other schools if you don’t feel good there.

If I excel in Kiski, then I will more than likely apply to Andover and Exeter.

Once again, thank you.

I’m an Exeter grad - take the Kiski offer and don’t look back. If you notice - we had amazing students on this CC board (including those from crummy school districts) who were turned down at both Exeter and Andover. The application numbers at both schools are going up, not down, and it’s becoming more competitive especially for FA dollars.

I hate to use a lazy cliche - but the bird in the hand is better than a hope and a prayer. The odds are not good you’ll get into either school. The odds, however, are good that you’ll get a great education at Kiski and be exposed to more opportunities because there will be fewer students competing for them. The student teacher ratio is awesome.

If you like your current school (it appears you don’t) you can stay and take a gamble. But I’m with the others. You’ll regret staying home if you apply to Exeter or Andover and find yourself still on the outside looking in.

Please also note that going to one school with the intent to transfer to another often has negative results especially at the school you’re attending. Love the school that loves you. It’s a small world and you don’t want to burn any bridges.

I know a CC’er who went to Andover for two years. TomTheCat. With all that aside I think you should go to Kiski.

The cautionary tale for BS applicants is: don’t apply to a school you are unwilling to actually attend.

Okay - let’s talk about credibility. In another thread you started a few weeks ago you posted that you had just transferred to a Catholic school. Now you’re at a public school in a run-down neighborhood? And in the previous thread talked about applying to Andover but no mention of being waitlisted at Kiski.

So what’s the truth?

Busted? +++

The Catholic school could be the public one O.o ?

Perhaps somewhere . . . but not in this country.

Well, I was just browsing in my posts, and I see that everybody thinks that I am lying.

I went to this Catholic school near my house, because it was cheap, and better than my public school. I came to realize that I did not like a religious education, and I transferred back to my public school. After my first day at my public school, My mother tells me that the Director of Admissions at Kiski want to talk to us about financial aid.

I’m typing all of this on one of the Kiski laptops that we are given. I am still applying to Exeter and possibly Andover, though.
