I have a question about registering for the ACT and SAT as an adult.

I am a twenty-one year old who was homeschooled and I plan on taking both the ACT and SAT before I apply to schools in the fall. I have a question about registering for the tests. Do I need to register through a local school district or can I simply get in contact with the College Board and get registered? My thinking is that since I’m an adult I wouldn’t need to go through a school district. Thanks for any answers.

As far as I am aware, all you need to do is go online and register to take the test, and you do not need to go through your high school… Even those in high school are not required to register through the high school to take the tests on dates that tests are given nationally. A number of states have state only test dates that differ from the national test dates, when high school students are actually required to take the test because the state is using the test to show compliance with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, and those tests are typically registered through the high school.

All SAT registration is directly with College Board - pretty sure ACT is the same. You pick a school for the test site, but you don’t need any affiliation with the school.

The question is whether it helps you, as it is a test for a 17 ish yr old, does it benefit you in the application process? Check with your target schools that it is either necessary or even used in the application when taken as a 21 yr old.
