This website has been referred to by many in this forum so I have taken a look at it. Now I’m confused about the wording of the symbols in this website. When it says “N” (=does not accept), does this mean that upper level course work will STILL not substitute the AP credit of the general course. For example, I AP’ed out of Gen Bio 1 + 2 + both labs. So for the schools with “N”, if i take like Genetics with lab or like immunology with labs, it will NOT subsitute the fact that I skipped Gen Bio right? Essentially, I am locked out of applying to these schools already because I didn’t meet their requirements. Is this correct thinking? Or is it that even w/ schools with “N”, I can still apply to these schools if i take upper level courses like genetics or immunology or something like that?

OP, if I was planning to apply to a school that had an N listed in an AP course I took, I would call them and have them explain their policy to me in person. The number of medical schools that have any problems with AP credit seems to be getting smaller every year. They may have changed their policy. I am not applying to any of those schools so I never considered retaking an AP class in college, but if you must put one of them on your list, call.

A school that does not accept AP credit means you cannot substitute AP credit for that coursework. So, if a med school does not take AP credit for biology, that means you have to use college biology credit to satisfy the requirement. Does that have to be general biology? In my experience, no. Upper level biology works just fine. What they want to see, by and large, is that you have taken a year of biology and are thus somewhat familiar with the science of medicine (not saying bio = medicine). You can certainly accomplish that with genetics and immunology.

I wouldn’t worry if I were you. And quite frankly, I haven’t always been impressed with the people who were allegedly answering my questions over the phone. If I was going to call at all, I’d probably call on two separate occasions just to make sure the info was the same.

Yea Kristin thats how I would’ve thought of it as too but if you look closer at the key, there’s already a category for supplementing classes for satisfying the “college biology credit”–the “M” (=only if supplemented with advanced coursework). So if the medical school didn’t accept AP credit, they would’ve specified with an “M”–that they would want me to supplement with advanced bio courses to satisfy the bio requirement. But since they already have this category, I was assuming that the “N” category means they don’t accept AP CREDIT AT ALL–that is, even if you do take upper level classes, it still won’t replace the fact that I didn’t take gen bio and they would hold this against me when applying. If “N” meant that I could take upper level classes to satisfy, the N category would’ve been redundant because the “M” category serves the same purpose. But, again, I don’t know if I’m reading that right.
