I received 8100 in grants for a university i will be attending, however the tuition (and all the other costs for the year) come up for a total of about 17000. So that leaves me with about 8900 to pay off in some other way (scholarships, loans).

I have, and still looking for, tried to apply for scholarships. I know the only grants i can get to help me are the ones that i have already recieved in my financial aid package (pell grant and a supplemental grant). I am currently looking into loans (I was given an allowence of about 5000 for both the un subsidized and subsidized loans. And i can’t do the parent plus loan.

So what do i do now? Should i appeal to the school to see if i can get more Financial aid? Would it be worth it? If so, how would i go about doing it?

Definitely “appeal” your financial aid decision- you might get more out of it, but you definitely won’t get less. I’m not sure of the exact procedure, but I think you pretty much have to present your case to the financial aid office at the university in question.

Best case scenario: you’ll get scholarships and/or loans to cover the rest of the money.

Worst case: you won’t get anything to cover it. BUT- $8900 is a lot, but not necessarily unmanageable. You can probably make $1000-$2000 working over the summer, and another $1000-$2000 working (either on-campus or somewhere near campus) during the year. Junior and senior year, you could become an RA- oftentimes, the money covers the cost of your room. Apply for outside scholarships- fastweb.com and scholarshipexperts.com are good, but a google search for “college scholarships” will turn up a long list of ones you can apply for. Most of them require an essay, but some are as simple as filling out a survey.

Why can’t you do the parent plus loan? If it is because your parents won’t qualify for it then if they apply for it and are turned down you will be eligible for additional $4000 in Stafford loans.

^^ because my parents are devorced and my dad has made it clear that he wants nothing to do with this and my mom’s credit is bad.

If your Mom applies for a PLUS loan and is turned down you will be eligible for an additional $4000 in Stafford loans. I believe it only requires that one parent (your Mom in this case) apply and is turned down.

ah, okay thanks swimcatsmom.
