I have a ratio question.

"A fruit salad is made from pineapples, pears, and peaches mixed in the ratio of 2 to 3 to 5, respectively, by weight. What fraction of the mixture by weight is pineapple ? "

The answer is 1/5, but I don’t know how that is. Could anyone please explain this?
Thank you!

(fraction of pineapple by weight)
= (weight of pineapple) / (total weight of all ingredients of fruit salad)
= 2 / (2 + 3 + 5)
= 2 / 10
= 1/5.

You’re likely overthinking this one. The ratio says that for every 2 pineapples there are 3 pears and 5 peaches. So 2 pineapples/2 pineapples + 3 pears +5 peaches (fruit in all)= 2/10=1/5. The correct answer is 1/5!

Hmmm…! Thank you both! :)
