^^^ I think our daughters must have been born under the same sign. Mine had one book to read this summer for her English class. ONE. I nagged her to read a chapter a week (because I also started to read it and will admit that even I - an avid reader - found it utterly boring). She OK’d me. She didn’t do it. Now she gets to read the entire boring book in just a few days, just when all of her friends are coordinating their “last __________s” before school starts. And she is missing the parties, the swimming, the lake trips, the malls, the smoothies. Yup, should’ve listened to dumb old Mom back in June. #NotUnderControl.
I recommend Books on Tape for the boring books.^^ At least it keeps the pages turning.
@twoinanddone It has to be annotated. Nope, she has to actually read this one.
My daughter listens while she reads. I would drive me crazy because books on tape are so slow, but she liked it and as I said, it keeps the pages turning.
My kid has the count of monte christo this summer to read and the audible is 55 hours long!
Plenty of time to take notes during those 55 hours!
The ACT36 guidebook worked for my three kids. Each took the test three to five times to get what they needed. In each case, the first test didn’t look good and I identified schools that fit their score. Uncool schools. They woke up and started reading ACT each night.
Years ago we employed a reading service. A thousand bucks later I learned that the instructor was a way cool guy and I was not. Oh well. That led me to my theory of the cost of cool. And every year I discussed data to support my theory. 15 years later we have discussions about Gladwell’s and Kahneman’s books. Finally getting payback!
Another story of “letting them do it on their own”…my dd was going to graduate with her master’s from Columbia (she graduated college early so she wasn’t even 21 yet). I looked on the graduation information page and was going to ask if she had gotten tickets and micromanaged the process, but then I said “No, she is graduating from graduate school, she should be able to handle this.” She got tickets…but for the University Convocation not the Master’s ceremony. We managed to make it in at the last minute but not without much stress!
