I have no idea what I want to go to college for
Get a copy of the College Board Book of Majors. Go through with post-it’s and mark what looks interesting. Look for clusters and patterns. Take a couple of classes in 2-3 area of interest freshman year. Talk to career center at college about those majors. Pick major.
You are not unusual. Go to a school that has a wide range of majors, take different classes in your first two years and then decide.
Unless this is a more existential “cri de comer” and you are asking if college is the right thing to do right now. For many, a Gap Year is the answer. If that’s the question, then take a look at The Gap Year Advantage by Karl Haigler.
There are many ways to approach this issue. First off, do you really have no idea? Are there any subjects that have interested you in school? Then ask yourself the cheesy “where do I see myself in five years” questions. Consider the lifestyle you want to live.
There are quizzes all over the place to help you find a major that matches your interest in characteristics.
If this isn’t helpful, people usually go with one of three options.
Spend a couple of semesters at a community college to find what really excites you. You’ll save money, and won’t waste any time.
Go ahead to a university, and take the time to try a bunch of different things.
Take a gap year. In this time you can volunteer, travel, work, whatever you like, and explore your interests through this or on the side.
