DH and I have been busy the last two days working on our chicken coop extension. I’ve been helping him frame and at the same time I’m priming posts and walls and rafters. Needless to say we’ve been pretty much parked in our yard working all day in the heat. Was supposed to be 96 today but I think the smoke from all the wildfires is keeping it a bit cooler. Not much, but a bit. Humid, though.
Anyway, I was out earlier this afternoon priming away when I hear a noise. We have an absolutely quiet street other than the occasional car. This wasn’t a car.
As it got closer, I figured out it was a young man rolling his two big suitcases up the hill. Our house is uphill from the bus line on the highway- it’s a good half mile up and a 500’ elevation gain. Adding two and two together pretty quick, I called out to him and asked him where he was headed. Yep, heading uphill another half mile to Lewis and Clark College.
Gave him a ride. Figured I’d want someone to do that for my kid. It’s just too damned hot to push two big suitcases up a mile. He was a real nice young man.
Sweet. I’m always impressed when students are bringing themselves to college, alone with no parents. I think those are the individuals who are truly destined for great things. I love stories of your kindness - this is what its all about. When I see the protests in the media I always wonder what would happen if each screaming person did something positive instead.
He only went alone because there wasn’t room for him after his parents loaded the car and U-Haul with all the extra furniture and decorative pillows they’re bringing, so he had to take the bus.
Seriously, I agree. I think those independent enough to head off on their own often do well.
